Was at a breakfast today with my friend Lacho. One of the waitresses and I caught each other’s eye and, eventually, she made her way over.

Speaking Spanish, she starts talking to Lacho (who also speaks Spanish). About 15 seconds in, she asks me if I speak Spanish (in Spanish), to which I answered “Nein”.

She looked me, smiled a bit, then spoke to Lacho before leaving. He then turns to me and says “She says you need to learn Spanish, then come back to ask her out.”

Challenge… accepted!

“Will you translate for me?”

“Sure.” (Lacho grins, is beginning to enjoy this.)

So I wait until she isn’t busy and then wave my hand. She comes back, and Lacho says he is going to translate for me.

Looking at her, of course, I say (pausing so Lacho doesn’t get behind):

“In the movies… this is the moment… where I offer to teach you English… and you offer to teach me Spanish… over dinner and wine of course. I am going to leave my name and phone number… and if you want to have dinner… just give me a text or call…” …pointing at my phone… “…We can figure the language thing later, using this.”

I wrote my name and number on the receipt, and left my business card for good measure.

This was 6 hours ago, the restaurant closes in 30 minutes.

Will she reach out?
