Why are Alton Brown’s electric can openers so unhygienic?

  • He never cleans them (ewwww!)
  • Something intrinsic to electric can openers.

I have this much interest in this year’s Olympics:

  • 0.0
  • A tablespoonful
  • A duffle bagful
  • A dump truckful
  • A Grand Canyonful

Hé ! I must change my vote to “truckfull” : we won gold in biathlon ! !

What the hell happened to the format of this site?

  • I dunno, weird isn’t it?
  • Looks the same to me.

You’re super rich. Would you consider doing a half-and-half inheritance (dispersing half of your assets to your heirs while you’re still alive, then half after your death)?

  • Yes, why wait until death to give them lots of $$$
  • No, they’ll get the full inheritance after your death, not any sooner.

Has the background on this site changed? Or has it always been the herring-bone, circuit board-esque design?

  • Yes, the herring-bone circuit board thing is new.
  • No, the background has always been the herring-bone thing
  • I don’t see the herring-bone now, and don’t remember it from earlier
  • Maybe it is a function of what you select for “Interface” in the settings???

  • @karen_lingel should maybe link to an image of what weird UI she sees

For those of you who wouldn’t give your kids part of their inheritance early, why?

  • Even though I’m rich, I might need the money myself.
  • I don’t think I’ll need the money, but giving them millions at this age would ruin their lives in some way.

Mark all that are true.

  • The herring-bone, circuit-board background is a feature of the “graceful” interface.
  • Karen experienced a seemingly transient glitch where the “graceful” background was moved to the top layer and all layers became transparent, resulting in a cacophony (or the visual equivalent) of all the layers mashed together.
  • It seems to be fixed now.
  • For those of you pre-giving inheritances, are you related to me?

Sorry folks, but this is another pointed hypothetical inspired by this just coming up for a mind-boggling second time within the past 3 years amongst just the people I know in real life…

Let’s imagine for a moment that you are right now between 65 and 82 years old. You have one or two adult children who are roughly 30 years younger than you. You haven’t been feeling well lately, so you seek medical attention and learn you are in kidney failure, and must start dialysis right away.

If one of your children is a match, would you accept a (live-doner!) kidney from them?

  • Yes, why not?
  • Yes, but only if I was under 70
  • Yes, but only if I could be certain my kidney issue wasn’t inherited by my child/ren
  • Yes, and I would outright ask my child/ren to be tested
  • No, it’s not appropriate to take a much younger person’s organ when I will only get a few years from it
  • No, even if they volunteered it’d feel coercive
  • No, and I would ask them not to be tested

This Sunday I’ll be watching:
  • Super Bowl, for the game
  • Super Bowl, for the ads
  • Super Bowl, but only because someone else in my household is forcing me to watch
  • Puppy Bowl
  • Something completely different
  • Nothing
  • What is this “Super Bowl” you speak of? And why are you calling it “football” when the ball rarely touches feet?

I can pretty much instantly name with confidence

  • Both Super Bowl teams
  • One of the Super Bowl teams
  • Zero of the Super Bowl teams

Is it unethical to sign up for steeply discounted newspaper and magazine subscriptions, like 6 months for $1, if you know you’ll cancel before the regular price extension kicks in?

  • Yes, you’re unfairly taking advantage of them
  • No, there’s a good chance you’ll forget to cancel in time and have to pay $$
  • No, but if you cancel you must send back the free tote bag
  • It doesn’t matter to me since I’d never pay a cent for news and opinion

Could you do a better job than Biden as president right now?

  • yes, I could
  • no, but I’d be better than Trump
  • no, and I’d be even worse than Trump

Can you crack an egg one-handed?
  • Yes. I’m the huevos jefe!
  • I can do it more often than not.
  • Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
  • It worked once or twice, mostly by accident.
  • “Crack” one handed, yes; freeing the contents, still working on that.
  • Never tried it.

For those interested in the Super Bowl, what is your reason for rooting for one team of the other?

  • I’ve been a fan of one of the teams for years
  • I don’t care about either team, I just want a competitive game
  • I’m rooting for the team I perceive to be the underdog
  • I want one of the cities to get a championship
  • I don’t care about either team but I’m betting on one of them
  • I will be rooting for my pool numbers (Go 2-7!)
  • I don’t care at all about the game or the teams but I want to be able to pick an opinion

When I make a burger, the ground beef I like to use is:
  • 70% lean/30% fat
  • 80/20
  • 85/15
  • 90/10
  • 93/7
  • I mix two or more of the above
  • I mix one of the above with non-beef (pork, veal, sausage, …)
  • A different kind of ground beef
  • I use whatever I happen to have/whatever was on sale
  • Pfft! You’re not using hand-chopped steak, you heathen?!
  • I don’t use any beef

For some reason I haven’t been able to find 80/20 ground beef at my usual stores (Trader Joe’s and Target) recently, only 85/15 and 93/7. In order to meet the rules of this thread, why do you think this is?

  • Supply chain problems
  • They stopped carrying it because most of their customers are averse to fat, so the 80/20 isn’t a big seller.
  • They’re just always out of it whenever I go shopping.
  • Other reason

  • No, there’s nothing unethical about taking advantage of a discount.
