There was an article yesterday about this in the South Bay Daily Breeze. Apparently some Internet advertisers imbured with an excess of unmitigated gall have developed a way to get pop-up ads to appear on your computer screen even if you aren’t formally connected to the Internet.
Granted when I read something like this a light colored “urban legend” goes off in my head…
Such a thing would be just as rude as someone hopping on the hood of my car and showing me a newspaper page through the whindshield (an illustration used by a grade-school teacher about 1958.)
Actually, this happened to me yesterday night. I shut off my internet connection and approx. 10 minutes into typing out my assignment, a pop-up add appeared. It still remains a mystery and yeah, I’m still pissed off about it. Greedy bastards.
Two things that’ll probably help alleviate that:
Get Ad-Aware
Disactivate Active Desktop
ACtually, I think that the article (I couldn’t find it on a quick perusal of their site) might have been refering to the AdCo that started using some of the built in messenger functions in windows to let them send you popups without the browser being open. I heard about it as well yesterday. You would still be connected to the internet, but not browsing.

New Internet marketing tool combines leading annoyances
A cursory glance at the offender’s website suggests that disabling file and printer sharing will eliminate this annoyance. Of course, that’s only practical if you have a single PC attached to the internet – obviously not the route you want to go if you are on a LAN.
That being said, if you see this man, kick him square in the nuts.
And don’t use Microsoft products.
