New to this board so forgive me if I’m in the wrong area. From reading these boards there seems to be a wealth of knowledge about everything imaginable.Good job you people.
My question involves these blasted popups that keep-well,popping up.
I’m not the most pc savvy character around, matter of fact downright ignorant of most things, but I always thought a secure site was just that.Secure.
Was reading my bank statement when one of those "warnings pops telling me how I can rectify the problem for signing up for their service.
My question. How can they get into a secure site?Do I call the bank and tell them what happened? Will they be able to do anything about it?This is the first time it’s happened to me there.
Can I notify my ISP and get any satisfaction?
What’s the straight dope on these identity criminals?
The popups are probably not coming from you bank. You have probably downloaded some kind of stealth software (installed with certain freeware or automatically downloaded from certain sites on the fly) and it is sending you popups.
Go to doxdesk.com. The site runs a script that does a quick scan of your browser to see if any adware is installed (it can’t find them all, but does find a lot of them). You can also download AdAware to scan your system for parasitic adware. Once you find the offending programs and delete them (AdAware will do it automatically; doxdesk gives you manual instructions in case you want to understand where the bugs lodge themselves), set your Internet security level to medium high. This will prevent the auto-downloaders from auto-downloading.
Unless you’re using some kind of popup blocker, this won’t eliminate all popups - just the ones generated by the stealth/parasitic adware. However, you should remain free and clear from popups on secure sites and others (like here) that don’t allow popups.
Titan2, you’re not in the wrong area, but it helps to look around or do a search before posting. Someone else may have already addressed your topic. For example, here:
Thanks for your help.I read this and the other thread and installed Adaware free version.I’m still stuck with-I think-7 out of the 70something the free program fixed.Haven’t noticed the popup frequency much anymore.(there goes one)
One thing bugs me tho.I have 3 that need fixing in my add/remove program sitting in my control panel?.How did this happen?I don’t recall using that feature.
Is the fee worth it and reasonable?I haven’t clicked thru to sign up
They install with a lot of freeware installations. If you’ve downloaded any free programs, particlularly some of the P2P applications, you will find these things have been installed.
I personally use Spybot search and destroy (http://security.kolla.de/ ) and it does a good job. I don’t know anything else about it htough so I won’t recommend it. It is also free and comes with updates. Seems to work well.
When combined with NoAds (http://www.southbaypc.com/NoAds/) to block the popups themselves it is 100%. By putting common wildcard entires like “porn” and “!!!” into NoAds I very rarely get popups at all, even at new sites.
