No, we are supposed to respect him because he is a theologian and biblical scholar of the highest order who has spent his entire life in the study and contemplation of Christian teachings. That “empty theology” that you so disdain is exactly what he was giving his opinion on.

The great thing about religious teachings is that they are so extensive and so self contradictory that they can justify anything. Which means that if you are a self aggrandising megalomaniac who thinks the world should “recognise your power” you can use them to say whatever you want them to say.
The bummer is though, people like myself and **Der Trihs ** are going to consider the personal choices you and your church have made about the biblical teachings you are or are not choosing to enforce or recognise, and the interpretation you are choosing to put upon them, and hold you personally accountable. We are going to refuse to let you get away with the bullshit excuse beloved by sages, mystics, religious leaders and other charlatans, namely that “all you are doing is studying and comtemplating” mystic teachings, and that your pronouncements choices about what is right, wrong and indifferent are not your own.

This whole fuss makes me agree with the Pope less but respect him more. The differences are real & he’s not afraid to affirm them. He’s not condemning all non-
Catholics to Hell. He’s just saying that the Catholic Church is The True Church, all other churches & faiths are lacking, but God’s/Christ’s Grace still saves those outside the visible True Church. I say the same about Trinitarian Incarnational Christianity, whether it be Catholic, Orthodox, Reformed, or Other- The Triune God, of Whom Jesus is the Incarnation of the Son, is the Only Real God, all faiths which focus on other concepts of God are lacking, but God/Christ still saves many in those faiths, not because they are correct or because it doesn’t make any difference, but because of His Love & Grace.
