Popover ad

Just now, when I clicked from the main Straight Dope page to the message board, an ad popped up completely covering everything else in my browser. I didn’t think to get the URL, but it was something about “fix this nation”, and appeared to be an anti-Obama screed.

The political wisdom of an advertiser choosing this board for that message aside, I really don’t think we want to allow popover ads here. Has anyone else gotten this? Is there anything we can do to block this?

Were you logged in when it happened? Zotti announced some new annoying ad-types would be on the horizon for people that are not logged in.

I also got the political popover ad at least twice today when clicking from the main Straight Dope page to the message board. I was not logged in at the time. I actually came straight to ATMB for exactly that reason to see if anyone had asked about it yet.

Mmmm… popovers…

I’ll eat a popover, but vastly prefer turnovers.

That ad got me today when I was at work! While at work, I keep the Dope scrunched down in a short, but wide box at the bottom of my screen. I clicked a new page or whatever, and a big Obama ad popped up, destroying my false sense of internet sneakery.
I aso am usually not logged in while at work.

Thanks, Obama!

FWIW, here’s Big Ed’s thread announcing the new ads: Ads for non-logged-in users - About This Message Board - Straight Dope Message Board

It say’s they’re meant to be popunders.

Sounds like yet another sleaze-bag advert company has decided to sell one thing while actually doing something else. At least for some common browser types in some common use cases.
FWIW2, I’m always logged in and have yet to see an ad on either my locked-down heavily blocked PC or my all-but-naked-to-the-net tablet. Both are Win8.1 & IE11.

I got another ad just now (a different one). This one was https:/ /spectrum2.pch.com/Path/MayTVcontrol/IdentSDOBPCH.aspx?tid=a1843764-05b5-4da1-a4c2-3e037689a542&utm_source=Tapstone_2250&utm_medium=ACQ_Display&utm_campaign=Desktop&utm_content=WinItAll_MayTV2015_1_Desktop (space added between slashes to prevent autoparsing). And yes, I was and remain logged in, but I don’t know whether the ad was spawned by the main SD page (which doesn’t have logins or accounts) or by the SDMB (which does).

Apple popovers, yum. Strawberry, cherry, raspberry, etc., good. I’ll pass on the rhubarb popovers.

So I visited this thread just now without logging in. No ads for me. I use Firefox with one ad blocker: AdBlock Plus v2.6.9.

After logging, still no ads.

I suspect your computer may be infected with malware.
