"Popping", AKA dancing in an Eclipse

I’m sure we’ve all seen the commercials for the Mitsubishi Eclipse wherein people seem to having a great time.

The first one that I recall seeing was people trying to sing along with a song by Barenaked Ladies called One Week, and cracking up because the guy is talking too damn fast. I’ve done this myself, though not whilst driving, and is pretty dang fun and funny. Especially if you and your friends are drunk as monkeys.

Anyway, to the point:

The second one I remember seeing is people listening to a song by Dirty Vegas called Days Go By. It mostly focuses on a girl riding shotgun who is “dancing” to the music. The dance she’s doing reminds me of the time I was in like 4th grade and saw a movie called “Breakin’”. Anyway, it looked like “The Robot”, only faster and more fluid. I always thought this was a pretty cool looking dance.
In any case, I have researched this a bit and found out that this sort of dance was a rave thing called “popping”. Apparently, it has died out a bit, and is “so last week” and all that jazz.

So, my question is this:

Is it just sort of free-form, wherein you have kind of a controlled seizure?
Are there actual “moves” to it, that you would have to learn?

The song is really cool, I downloaded it and like it, and think that this “popping” stuff could be a lot of fun if I could only find more about how to do it and what not, if there are even any rules and so on.

Any thoughts or anything?

I believe it has some basic moves, and it’s not some kind of seizuring. IIRC, it has the same backround or so with hip hop dancing (breakdancing, etc…)

I liked both commercials and both songs, esp. the latter. I think of NYC (the city) when I think of popping. You might ask an aerobics instructor at a gym for info. Just a WAG.

I’ve actually made it my project to try and learn how to breakdance. I figure it’ll keep me in shape (and it looks pretty damn cool). So this is the page I found… it has info on all sorts of dance moves including popping. Sorry about any popups and stuff.

Audiobottle

All I know is that if that skank tried to pull that crap in my car I’d kick her to the curb and toss that piece a garbage CD after her faster than you can blink.

Strangely a friend of mine and I found out that we both found this ad detestable when we accidentally came across the Dirty Vegas CD in a pile of freebies and started trying to remember where we’d heard it before.

Thanks for the “helpful” response there, Rib Eye. When does your summer job start, anyway?

This subject came up in a thread from about a month ago, and if the OP searches for it he/she will find a number of links to sites discussing popping and locking.

Can’t say I care for Mitsubishi cars very much, but those commercials have got to be some of the most talked-about on TV.

Useless trivia: the night DJ at the St. James, a topless bar in Houston, does a whole Mitsubishi set, including the songs mentioned above, plus the Wise Guys’ “Start the Commotion”, which featured in an earlier Eclipse ad. So far I haven’t seen any of the dancers attempting to pop ‘n’ lock, which is just as well, as it would likely be a bit, er, disturbing.

Well aren’t you charming! You must be quite the ladies’ man.

http://www.breakdance.com/moves/ is a great site for this including videos and stuff. I still can’t breakdance, just a little white boy.

Thanks. You guys rock. I’ll be popping in no time, and when I do I’ll post a video on my web site so y’all can check it out.
I think I’ll call it “fatguyinalilcoat.mpeg” or something like that.

Even rib eye. You’re pretty cool, man. No sarcasm here like some of the other posts. I mean, our world depends upon balance. Our very existence demands it. So, for every cool person out there, we must have an asshole. Sometimes two.

Personally, I commend you primarily on being who you are, critics be damned, and also on making our way of life possible.

You da man, man.
