Pork Ramen Endangered?

My favorite flavor of Ramen soup is pork. I can’t find it in the stores around here. Is it being discontinued? Does anyone know of a source for it in Chicagoland?

First they came for our spinach, but I said nothing because I don’t eat spinach.

Then they came four our Vegemite, but I said nothing because I don’t eat Vegemite.

Then they came for our pork ramen…

Which brand? Nissin Top Ramen, Maruchan or some other brand?

As strange as this sounds, you can order ramen from Amazon.com, so you might have luck looking there.

Brian, thank you! I’ve been looking for Rice Krispies in the single-serving bowls, and absolutely noplace around here carries them. A quick look at Amazon, and there they are. My breakfast-at-work woes are over!

I don’t think that pork ramen is being discontinued, because I have four packets of it sitting my kitchen right now, and I like just a couple hours north of Chicago. I believe it’s Maruchan. If all else fails, Lee, I can guarantee that Sentry stores in southeastern Wisconsin carry it.

I live just a couple hours north of Chicago, razzafraggit.

Which is wonderful news - I’ve always maintained that ramen noodles have all the belly-filling wamth and culinary delight of a typical detective novel. Detective novels, for their part, have all the intensity and unpredetectable goodness of a ramen noodle package’s nutritional panel.

Nope I just bought some pork the other day, but other than the shrimp, I personally can’t taste the difference in the flavors…

Why not go to Mitsuwa at Arlington Heights rd. and Algonquin? It’s like ramen heaven.

The new Super H Market at Waukegan and Oakton is closer to you and has ana amazing selection. I have not seen pork ramen but if anyone had it they would. Their food court is mind blowing as well. Stick to the Korean stuff and you will be happy.

Mitsuwa is another excellent suggestion. Golden Pacific at 5353 N Broadway is new and one of the cleanest Asian grocery stores in the area but my personal favorite is Thai Grocery at the intersection of Argyle and Broadway.

I second SuperHMart and Mitsuwa, if not for pork ramen, then for a fun afternoon.

Ramen company: Wow!! We can’t keep pork ramen on the shelves; it keeps flying off!! Tell you what, buy the miso flavor ones and we will give it to you for ten percent off.

Plenty O’ pork-flavored ramen at Golden Pacific as mentioned above. At least time I was there which was just like a week ago.

But now I am curious to see what this Super H Market is!

Thank you all for your suggestions. I think I will try Super H mart first, as it is closer. I thought about Amazon, but I hate ordering from those one-click patent bastards. I like Top Ramen or Maruchan best. I do need to go to Mitsuwa for rice and another green onion chopper soon.

If you’re ever on the Southwest Side, there’s International Club on 40th & Pulaski, right off the Stevenson/I-55. International Club is basically a huge warehouse full of predominantly Asian foodstuffs. Kinda like a Sam’s Club, but no membership required. That’s where I buy my 25-lb sacks of jasmine rice. Anyway, they have a wall that’s covered with all sorts of ramen and noodle products. I would say the ramen section is about 20 to 30 yards long. They certainly have pork (as well as some rarer–at least in America–flavors like Kim Chee), and they got the good three-part ramen, where you have a flavor packet, a vegetable packet, and an oil packet.

How much is the rice there, pulykamell? I get my #25 bags at Thai Grocery for $11.75. Int’l Club is really easy to get to. A similar North Side place is Chicago Food Corp on Kimball right at the Kennedy. You can’t miss the great big sign.

How do you assemble 3 part Ramen? I have never had that.

The same as regular Ramen, except you have three separate packages to tear and squeeze into the bowl. Actually, it’s quite good–not so much for the vegetable packet, but the oil packet. A lot of flavor compounds dissolve best in oil, so it really does taste noticeably better–especially the spicier flavors. (The flavor from pepper is not water soluble, as far as I’ve always understood it).

MikeG – I’ll have a look next time I’m in there. I usually only go about one every month or two to stock up, even though it’s only about a half mile from my house. IIRC, $12 sounds just about right for 25#.

Try the hot sesame oil for all ramen products as well as for any soup - good with any savory dish

Being able to buy Pork Ramen in Asian groceries is all well and good, but of course you can buy well-past-the sell-by-date fish barf candy and whatever at those places (do health inspectors even bother with them?). But the fact remains that Pork Ramen has completely disappeared from regular grocery store shelves in my area. I’ve checked Giant, Safeway, Harris Teeter…none of them carry it anymore. Did the FDA ban it or is there some Great Grocery Store Conspiracy? Did a bunch of people die from it? Did Al-Qaeda get to it? WTF?
