I noticed today there’s porn being sold at airports–at least, at Phoenix airport and Santa Ana airport in California.
This seems strange to me. Okay, you’re at the airport, and you’ve just bought some porn. Now you… what…
Go read it in the bathroom?
Seriously?
There’s seriously enough people who will do this that it is worth the business owners’ while to sell these magazines?
I also often wonder who is buying the porn at Barnes and Noble and other such establishments. You’ve grabbed some porn, and now what? You… walk up to the nice old lady/sixteen year old girl/clean-cut young family man and say, “I’d like you to sell me this porn, please.”
Seriously?
I mean… don’t get me wrong… I have in the past bought pornographic magazines. At stores where that was the main point of their business.
But I can’t imagine buying it at BnB.
Any Dopers have experience selling porn at non-porn-specialty places? What’s it like for you?
When I first noticed the porn at the airport I wondered what was up with it as well. Now, I figure that horny guys travelling buy the stuff when they land in another city and use it in the hotel. This keeps them from having to put “Forrest Hump” on their expense account when they use the corporate card at the hotel.
Many travling people like to be able to buy porn. The airports stores do a pretty good business selling it. I’m sure the hotels they stay at would love to sell it in their stores to but when people see porn for sale at a hotel they tend to think of the place as sketchy.
I’ve seen porn in just about every american airport I’ve been to. It’s usualy just mainstream magazines like playboy.
Selling it, I’ve done some temp sales positions at bookstores that have had Playboy, Playgirl and similar stuff. College bookstore so the consumers were college kids. Didn’t bother me to sell it and it didn’t seem to bother the people buying it.
Buying it, I first remember seeing a Playgirl at Waldenbooks when I was about 16. It had naked pictures of a guy on a soap I watched who I was in lust with so I stole it. When I was in college there was a regular-type bookstore that sold harder core stuff (erections but no sex) and I bought magazines there and no one seemed to care.
A few years back I bought a Playgirl in a grocery store because an online friend of mine was featured. The clerk didn’t care but the guy behind me in line was very concerned that I understood that the magazine I had selected had naked men in it. He thought I’d made a mistake or perhaps hadn’t noticed the muscular shirtless man on the front cover.
The airport bookstore I’ve most recently been in (at Logan) has a lovely shelf of literotica, the kind targetted to women. Lots of kinky stuff in there too. I haven’t seen magazines but probably because I haven’t been looking.
I bought my first Playgirl at Waldenbooks.
: blushes :
But I bought it there as part of a test as much as anything else…to see if I could do it. And I could! So I never felt the urge again. Playgirl was boring anyhow.
Oh, but the fun you coluld have had “No, sir, I assure you this has plenty of naked girls galore. Why I was just thumbing through it a minute ago, and the amount of tits and ass in here would make an ordinary Playboy reader absolutely blush. No you cannot look in it, as I am about to check out and don’t want you to oogle my new pornography. Go get your own.” And then chuckle at the possibility that you have piqued his curiousity, and maybe he’s been wrong all these years. And then he goes and buys a Playgirl for himself…
