Pornography for the Blind

Maybe my imagination is deficient in some way, but it just strikes me that even though pornography is an overhwelmingly visual medium, there must be some sort of niche which caters for those who can’t engage with a visual medium.

Are there any specialised forms of pornography for the blind?

mm

Wow, an untapped market niche!

I don’t know the answer, but the OP reminded me of the line in the play Butterflies are Free where the blind guy asks the girl (in response to her question if there was anything she could do for him) if she could read him some porn. They don’t have any porn in Braille, he explains.
That’s got to have changed, people being what they are. I know that Playboy has been coming out in a Braille edition for a great many years now. I haven’t seen (or felt) one, but I suspect it’s articles only, but with Playboy, that’s enough.

I remember seeing porn novels on tape at a truck stop. I suspect that might work.

oops

How about phone sex? Also, there are erotic stories online – surely a blind person woulc be able to access those using whatever method he or she uses to access the rest of the internet.

What are your rates?

I don’t have an answer. I do have an interesting story about deaf people. My apologies - I know GQ is for answers, so ignore this post if you want, but it’s the only place I know of to share it.

My coworker’s uncle used to work for an organization that would make phone calls for the deaf community. The deaf person would get on his computer at home, and e-mail one of these people at the organization, and the person would make the call. So if you wanted to order a pizza, or call your mother, or something, they’d do it for you.

She tells me that first of all, sometimes they’d e-mail the place because they were having a fight, and the person would have to translate all of the fights, and stuff. And sometimes they’d call for…here my coworker paused, and said “other things”, and continued to tell me that sometimes they’d want to have phone sex. But they wouldn’t call and just say it, of course. They’d start developing into it, and the person then had to find a happy medium between keeping the deaf person happy and not actually, you know, participating in the phone sex themselves.

Just an interesting anecdote. I suppose blind people could avail themselves of 1-900 numbers if they wanted?

Soooo, If a blind person masturbates too much, do they go sighted?

Unfortunately, no. And the hand hair makes reading tough!

I love you folks.

Scent porn!

Huh…maybe ‘pop-up’ porno mags? Made of strong paper so they can feel it? I can imagine the fun of reading any of the gay porn that way! Reading this immediately brought to mind that scene in Robin Hood Men in Tights when the Blinken the blind servant has exactly such a thing. So we know of at least one that exists, be it a movie prop

This is incorrect.

After all, the ‘graphy’ part of the word 'pornography means ‘writing’. And Porn has been around for several thousand years, but photographs only for about 170 years. Historically, most porn has been strictly written, without illustrations.

And most blind people today have scanners or screen readers, which can convert written or electronic text into spoken words. So they just scan their porn, or download it from sites like Project Gutenberg (gutenberg.net). Where the Kama Sutra is regularly one of the top 50 downloaded works, and at least a couple volumes from the Marquis de Sade are available.

Wasn’t there a (joke, I hope) website with recordings of a man describing a porn movie in a monotonous tone of voice? I can’t remember where I found it, though.

Does it? I assumed it meant “scratching”, from the scratching of a stylus on a wax or clay tablet. The same root from which we get words like graph, graphics, seismogrpah and photograph, which are all distinctly pictorial. The OED agrees adding “writing, drawing, or graphic representation”.

Really? Do you have a reference for this claim?

On the face of it it seems untrue. From the Venus of Willendorf to the Greek pottery illustrations to the Roman mosaics to the various Japnese and CHinese painting up to the 20th century, almost all the historical pornography I can think of has been visual with little or no written element. The idea that in pre-literate societies most porn was strictly written is a little hard to accept without a lot of evidence.

Looks like there’s a market.

The bumps on a woman’s areola are braille for “Suck and lick here.”

Even some sighted people, especially women, prefer words (especially fan fiction) and sounds over pictures when it comes to porn.
