I have this long-suffering WD wallet-sized portable hard-drive that as of yesterday has suddenly developed an irritating–and worrisome–tic. When I plug it in, it lights up, whirs, and the computer says “hey, look! A disk drive!”
Then, however, its icon doesn’t appear in My Computer. Uh oh.
Any idea what’s going on? And more importantly, how to fix this?
Soemtimes the service which recognizes and assigns new disk drives gets stopped/corrupted. Have you ever used Disk Adminsitrator? If so, you will likely find an unlettered drive in there the same size as the one you are looking for, and you can assign a letter to it.
OK, after two days of misbehaving, it’s suddenly decided to reappear. But (once I unload all my backup onto a more reliable drive), I’m going to write down your Disk Administrator advice in case this happens again. Thanks a lot!
