the tabloids here in the UK lead me to believe that skeletal ‘celebritee’ clothes horse + former spice girl singer victoria beckham and her simpleton husband david, a footballer (soccer) are wowing the US on the celebrity circuit.
apparently, shes being offered movie roles and is trying to reinvent herself in a hip hop lopez vein.
while this should not be allowed to happen, is this true US posters? are these 2 fools taking up as many tabloid inches as they are in the UK, or are they met with complete indifference?
the latter would calm my soul. help me out…
Lets hope the US does take them to their hearts - that way the irritating fcukers may emigrate there permanently…
You’re welcome to em

Actually, here in Chicago, I’ve heard nothing about 'em. Granted, I’m not a tabloid-reader, but I am a movie-based-celebrity watcher (just to keep up on who’s doing what project.) Not a peep on 'em over at this end of the spectrum.
Don’t worry, UK dopers, we don’t give a hairy New York rat’s ass about those two. He’s dull, she’s too skinny, and she never smiles. It’s just creepy. We’re all trying to figure out why they keep showing up places.
There’s been a minor buzz about them for the past week or so. Since the Spice Girls are a distant memory and soccer is, literally, a “foreign concept” (like the Metric System, but even less threatening; the Metric System can actually be used to shortchange us in stores when we want to buy a quart of something), their main claim to fame in the States is a sidestream glamour from Bend It Like Beckham.
Remember the Japanese model who married a top sumo wrestler about 8 years ago? Americans can’t name either of them, and Mr. & Mrs. Beckham are just two steps above that level of celebrity in this country.
Having just gotten back to Chicago from London last week, I can say that Becks & Posh in LA is a much bigger thing to the British tabloids than it is to US papers.
Yes, they’re here, and yes, some of us know who they are. But the USA Today this morning had an article about them and how much they are enjoying LA because the US is the only place in the world where they can walk down the streets without being recognized.
who?
oh…
No.
I was astonished a couple of days ago to hear CNN’s Headline News mention Beckham’s name. They talked very briefly about his whole transfer soap-opera, when Man U accepted Barcelona’s bid for him but Beckham declined it.
I’ve noticed a couple of other references to him on CNN’s “scroll” at the bottom of the screen, too.
So there have been a few more sightings of him than usual. But it’s still nowhere like the coverage that you get of him in the UK, and hopefully won’t ever be (can’t stand the git, personally–Victoria is even less tolerable).
My fellow Americans,
You must not allow them to infiltrate our nation! You must stand at the shores and shout, “We do not want your tired, weary, and wretched! We do not want your has-been Spice Girls and your “football” stars! Go ye back to the MotherLand!”
I shall be returning to the States in less than 2 months, and I look forward to living yet again in the land of the free, the home of the brave, and the culture without Posh and her fucking Becks.
Selah.
Weird, I thought it was about this threat!
Sorry, no dice. I’m a sucker for cute British chicks. And I’m glad she married a soccer player, since he’s therefore obviously a sissy and I will be able to kick his ass at will.
Rock and roll ** Lizard **…
The claim that they’re “wowing” the US is laughable. I am convinced nobody has heard of them, and I’m glad to see this thread is bearing this out. I believe they presented a prize at an awards ceremony (MTV movie awards?) and the audience were all like “who?!?”
I also recall hearing that the Mirror newspaper sent a reporter to shadow them round LA. Nobody knew who they were, and they also had to beg to get boutiques closed to the public for them to go shopping there (one boutique eventually agreed after a lot of whining, and they’d said they wouldn’t even close for Madonna). BUT, according to Popbitch, Becks might just be the new face (and body) of Calvin Klein. He’s certainly got the looks - a lot better than his minging wife, anyway.
Anyway, if this couple come anywhere near you, don’t let them wow you. Send them back with a flea in their ear.
Until right this moment, I hadn’t heard of a Posh comeback effort.
I’m for it, if we can do a deal.
We’ll trade George W. for any or all of the Spice girls.
You can keep the soccer hooligan.
Deal?
USA Today, a nationally distributed newspaper aimed a couple of grades lower than the usual newspaper audience, had a feature on Mr. & Mrs. Beckham. They called him the most well-known sports star in the world, except for the US, where we never heard of him until that movie. Now that we’ve heard of the movie, we know him as “that bent guy.”
We give you Madonna and this is what you send us? Keep it up, England, and we’ll be forced to send over Rosie!
I was so relieved to return from England two years ago to find that no one knew, or cared, about Posh or Becks, Geri Halliwell, Robbie Williams, Boyzone …
I also laughed to hear about Posh’s plans to come over here. Never happen. We do not worship our celebrities in the manner they are accustomed to in the UK. We have our problems, but that is not one of them. Thank Og.
How can Becks make the kind of money he’s accustomed to, playing soccer in the USA?
Also I heard that no one wants him on their team in the US because he’s too much celebrity and not enough soccer player.
American ignorance rears its ugly head yet again.
American soccer teams would hate this! Have one of the best players in the world playing for them??? One who gets press??? What a disaster that would be!
Stop it. Please. My sides are hurting.
