Positive Gun News of the Day

Practically, everyone carries a cell phone these days. Use it. Let the people who are paid to handle this garbage, handle it.

Was driving off, not an option for the shooter?

Road rage is very unpredictable. Cars have been rammed and even forced off the roads. That guy with the knife was capable of doing anything.

Why did he pull over with the other guy in the first place? Just drive the fuck away. If the other guy is following you, drive straight to a police station.

Some people just prefer to take the law into their own hands. Those people are called “vigilantes”, aka “criminals”.

You haven’t seen multiple news articles on road rage? A car doesn’t offer much protection. Some drivers today are just nuts. Getting cut off or flipped off doesn’t justify extreme reactions like this.

So your suggestion is to pull over and stop, making yourself an easy target for ramming?

Yes, pull over in a very public area and hope the idiot doesn’t follow. That should work most of the time. Calling 911 is also an option. It’ll take time for officers to arrive.

This particular driver escalated this situation to an absurd level. He’s carrying a knife and yanks open the other person’s car door. Thank goodness the other driver could defend himself.

It’s too bad he didn’t have the common sense to drive the fuck away instead of pulling over and murdering another man. Neither of them is at all blameless here, and it’s too bad he will escape consequences in this case - it encourages other nutjobs to follow his example.

Woman’s 12 year old grandson defends home against two masked men. Grandmother was shot and is expected to recover.

That was good news that a 12 yr old had access to the family handgun.

I sense sarcasm, but it’s not unusual in many American houses. At that age, I knew where all of the assorted firearms and ammunition were kept. I knew where my father took off his holstered handgun (police officer) and where it was. It remained loaded, in its holster, and if I wanted to shoot it, that was fine. We’d just need to go to the range, and I’d have to clean it afterwards. At 12, I’d shot all of the firearms, barring one deer rifle that had a Monte Carlo stock cheekpiece that would have cut me had I tried it in my normal left-handed fashion.

The point is, they weren’t mysteries to us. Just tools. Annoyingly messy, loud, occasionally painful tools. (I don’t know who decided duck hunting should be done with a 7 pound, 12-gauge double barrel with no recoil pad, but I don’t like them.)

I don’t know if it was that way, in that particular 12 year old’s household, but it was that way in many rural and suburban households like the one I grew up in.

Bandsaws are tools too. So is morphine. Still don’t like the idea of pre-teens having free access to them. But hey, this thread is about good news not discussion of gun laws.

In 2018 73 kids accidentally shot themselves to death; many more were injured:

There was a major spike in accidental discharges by children in 2020 as many kids stayed at home but that wouldn’t be “fair” as there were extenuating circumstances.

Still think it’s a good idea to give a 12 year old access to guns?:roll_eyes::roll_eyes:

The fact that this isn’t “unusual” in many American houses is not “positive” in any way.

Moderating:

The way this thread has gone certainly does not belong in MPSIMS and I have moved it to GD.

Hari, AIUI, the thread was never meant to be a debate on firearms ownership or usage. Instead, it was a collection of news stories indicating positive use of firearms, the vast majority for self-defense of themselves or another party. And then discussion of those stories, possible improvements the user might have done, etc… Not a debate.

Rather than moving an interesting, long-running thread to a forum I (and I assume some others) never look at, I suggest that you just tell the recent spate of anti-gun posters here to stick to the subject and knock off the thread-shitting.

It isn’t a debate of gun rights to question whether a specific given example is “positive” or not. Note the third post in this thread which questions whether Bones’ original example is truly positive or not.

Modnote: We talked it over real quick. This is not a Great Debate Thread and I have returned it to MPSIMS.

Keep in mind this is not a debate thread.

Do not get into Gun Rights, but politely questioning links presented as positive is well within the idea of this thread.

Moderator Note

This thread is about positive gun news from a pro-gun point of view. There are plenty of other threads where one is free to present other views. As a news thread, this thread is subject to the same restrictions as other news threads (no politics, no hijacks about religious or emotional subjects, etc). Gun control is an emotional subject and tends to hijack all threads where it is mentioned, so please specifically avoid the gun control debate in this thread. There are plenty of threads where one can argue either for or against gun control on the SDMB.

You are free to express your opinion about whether any particular news item is in fact positive news. However, do not get into a debate over the issue. This is MPSIMS, not GD. If it gets into a debate, start a new thread in GD and link back to the post that started the debate here.

The vast majority of the posts from 2/14 forward do not belong in this thread. You are however free to post these comments elsewhere.

Thank you.

Thank you.

I try to only post news stories that are clearly self defense where someone saved their own life or family.

The use of deadly force should always be a last resort.

I’m thankful we have a thread where personal defense news can be posted.
