Possible BAD Thanksgiving?

Just wanted to see who else is a Thanksgiving orphan. My editor has assured me that I won’t have to come in at all on Thanksgiving, so I can actually make some plans and enjoy the holiday.

Snooooopy don’t sweat it…don’t answer the phone…hell ya got a machine for that don’t ya? Rent some movies ya really want to see…buy a case, or two, of your favorite beer…and WOOHOO!!! Happy Thanksgiving! Hey…it works for me!

P.S. If you just HAVE to have turkey…Swanson’s makes a good TV dinner one.

I’ve made what every orphan should make for Thanksgiving…

…reservations.

[sub]didn’t see that one coming, didja?:D[/sub]

ROFLMAO!!! Good one Ruby…but still I like a case or two and a Swanson’s better…don’t even have to leave the kitchen for that.

I’ll be in Reno with my husband and parents. (Odd little thanksgiving, yes?) Thanks for thinking of it though, I remember one of my first years out here when I bought one of those tiny pre-cooked turkey breasts and split it with another co-worker who was away from home and alone for the holiday. It was way pathetic and sad. Your idea is much better – hope you have some takers!

Hmmm … I may end up having a Thanksgiving pizza.

I wish I was going to be a thanksgiving orphan. We are doing fertility treatment and I was really hoping those follicles of mine could hold out till late in the week but, alas, they did not. So now we are able to go to the in-laws and I get to suffer through the endless debate of which brother will accompany my father in law to the caterer to pick up the turkey and which car would be best for this chore. THEN, we get to all go to Atlantic City the next day for what possible reason I can not say. At any rate, it will be a lot of riding in the car.

I would really rather be either celebrating with my husband and son at home, or alone.

One of the best Thanksgivings I ever had was the year I decided not to go anywhere. I had a half-dozen offers, but I just needed some down time. It was great, no dysfunctional family olympics, no pretending to like people you can’t stand. no prying questions. The only flaw in my plan was that I had planned on OD-ing on take-out Chinese food as my Thanksgiving meal, little did I know that it was the one day of the year take-out Chinese places closed.

Another holiday orphan here, but by choice. Like, Why a Duck, I find holidays alone to be much more relaxing and enjoyable than either with A) my family, which sucks or B) someone else’s family, which is worse, because now you have to be polite to them.

I plan to cook a small turkey with all the trimmings. I love to cook, so I get to use the carcass for soups, treating the pets, etc. And – I’m a fish-e-terian (don’t eat land animals), so this is my annual treat to myself: bird flesh.

Mmmmm… Bird flesh…

Then I’m going to use the next three days off to:

  • paint the bathroom
  • pad my post count
  • mulch the front yard
  • do the laundry, clean the house, etc.
  • nap a lot
  • watch too much bad television
  • and maybe rent some movies…

I highly recommend solo holidays. Just call the people you care about and tell 'em you’re thinking about 'em. Then when you get sick of them, just hang up and go have another piece of pie. Tip: You can often call your local grocery store and order a complete one-person turkey dinner, if it means that much to ya. Re-heat and presto! You don’t even have to cook!

Another tip: The movies and the mall are also open on Thursday. Some stores close early, but you can always go catch Harry Potter!

Keep a positive attitude about it, start your own traditions, and don’t feel sorry for yourself if you’d rather be somewhere else. Reach out – but only as much as you feel like – and treat yourself to little pleasures you don’t often allow yourself. Masturbate in front of the refridgerator or something…

It’s not going to severely wound me if I spend Thanksgiving by myself. And I’ve eaten turkey almost every day for the past few months as part of my weight-loss plan, so not eating turkey on Thanksgiving would probably seem like a special event as opposed to eating it. But I just wanted to see if any Dopers out there wanted to use the holiday as an excuse for a mini-Dopefest.

Too bad you’re not in San Diego (or are you)? I’m holding my annual Orphans’ Thanksgiving potluck. I choose to be an “orphan” so I don’t have to deal with my family, and I enjoy the company of friends and semi-strangers so much more!

JOhn.

I’m in Northern California.

Aw hell… i missed this entirely.

Snooooopy, if you still don’t have any plans, you’re welcome to come by my place. I’m not gonna be doing much of anything either, other than packing up boxes and stuff, but i do have “turkey” (okay, it’s gluten based, but at least it resembles the real thing). Lemme know if you’re interested. And feel free to bring whatever food (meat-based or otherwise) you like.
