Usually one of my friends will have Thanksgiving dinner at his/her house for all the “orphans” (those of us who are single and without family here). A friend of mine was going to do that this year, but she didn’t get enough “yes” responses and decided to cancel it. I would try to do it at my house, but I can’t imagine that I’d get any more responses than she did; it’s not like she’s hated or anything, evidently most of the “orphans” have other plans. So far, all my non-orphan friends have plans too. So, I need to figure out what to do here. My in-town resources have not been completely exhausted yet. I also need to see if there are any major America West ticket sales on Channel 9. Plus, I need to see if my roommate got me one round-trip buddy pass (which I’m using to go home at Christmas) or two. I wonder if there’s a group going to my friend’s parents’ cabin in Colorado. That would kick ass.
Where are you?
I think I’d be willing to trade you. Going home is scary.
Haul your ass on up to San Jose and come to my Orphan Thanksgiving.
Beats what I’m doing. My in-laws are coming into town and we’re going to eat at the Black-eyed Pea.
Come to FL, maybe I’ll show ya my waterbra.
Seriously though, my Thanksgiving is gonna suck. I have to work 6PM to midnight. My bosses are providing us with a turkey dinner, but have you ever tried to eat at a hospital? As soon as you sit down to enjoy your food, 10 emergencies come in and you don’t get back to the food till it is cold and icky.
When Iwas in college I used to make dinner for all my orphan friends, college kids who were from out of the country and couldn’t afford to fly back home for such a short time. It was never anything fancy, but it was fun. I miss those days.

Do what I do (I’m also an “orphan” on Thanksgiving) and go serve food to the homeless at a shelter or a mission. I can’t think of a better way to realize all we have to be thankful for than to make sure those that really don’t have anyplace to go get a decent meal with all the trimmings.
Ah Strainger, you are more than welcome to come to Colorado Springs if you want to…keep in mind you would be required to stay in a hotel as my house is not fit for man nor beast…but you could come up spend Thanksgiving with me at my brother’s house then head up to the resorts on Friday.
I am serious…if you need help with accommodations or whatever you are invited up here.
I might even be able to swing getting my client’s cabin in Breckenridge if I beg and plead enough!
Thanks for the invites, Sue Duhnym and techchick! As it turns out, I’ll be joining a number of my friends, friends of theirs that I don’t know, and their families at one of the local parks for Thanksgiving dinner (kept warm with Coleman stoves), libations, mountain biking, and hiking. Sounds like it’ll be a blast!
That was a beautiful suggestion, Shayna. If I wasn’t going to this event, I would most likely stay in town and volunteer at a homeless shelter. It’s definitely something I’ll keep in mind in the future.

Hmmm, on second thought, maybe I should check on flights to Tampa! Sorry you have to work Thanksgiving (and Christmas, and New Year’s Eve. I read your post in the other thread.) Sounds like you could really use a vacation. I think you should come up to Atlanta and hang out with us (the Atlanta Dopers and me) over the holidays!
A trip to Atlanta sounds great, but it may not be for a while. A friend of mine and I discuss moving there all the time, but right now it is only in the talk phase. Maybe one of these days we could take a little trip out there and see what our job and housing options are like.
Dude, I didn’t know you were in such dire straights. I’m an invitee T-day so I can’t extend it myself but I’ll see what I can do. Saturday Bob Taylor and I are going to be having great fun with… politically incorrect toys so if you’re free swing on up to Rio Salado at Usery Pass Road.
BAaaahh!!! Sucks… I’ll be alone for both the holidays this year.
Well, Cyndar, if you can’t make it up to Atlanta, then come on out for a Phoenix Dopefest! What you mean that’s less convenient? Our weather is a lot nicer, and that’s all that matters.
Hey, Whammo, both Sue Duhnym and Shayna have excellent suggestions for Thanksgiving. I think you’re close enough to San Jose to make a road trip to the orphan Thanksgiving there. Trust me when I say you’ll have a blast if you do. No, I don’t know any of the attendees personally (unless Narile’s going), but I can tell they’re a fun bunch.
Strainger, you are a cutie but my next major trip anywhere is Hawaii, because my Dad is paying for the flight! Now, if ya wanna meet me out THERE, that would be fun!
Michi
Sounds like fun, Cyndar! I’d love to! How much sucking-up would it take to get your dad to buy me a ticket too? At the very least you could wave to the Southeast portion of the Phoenix metro area as you’re flying over it (I’ll wave back).
I remember you talking about this before, but I’ve forgotten a lot. What island does your dad live on? Are you going to be visiting any of the other islands while you’re there?
My dad lives on Hawaii. I am sure he will take me to as many places as he can while I am there, and I’ll get to see the non-touristy places too, which will be nice. I’m really looking forward to this trip. However, it is only after 10 years that my dad has finally in a position to fly me out there…so…if ya wanna come you’ll have to find your own flight…sorry! But just think…MICHI…in a bathing suit!
You tempt me, Michi. When is your trip? Sounds like you get along really well with your dad. That’s an awfully long time to go without seeing him.
My trip won’t be till April or so, when I’ll have vacation time saved up. I get along with my dad cause I never see him!
And I got adopted for Thanksgiving dinner/lunch tomorrow. My friend Kerri invited me over to her family’s house for a 1PM meal.
I’m glad you have a place to go for Thanksgiving, Michi. It’s a good thing that you don’t have to work until 6:30 so you get to have a good meal and have some time to spend with your friend. Have a happy Thanksgiving!
I’ll be alone for both holidays, too. S’okay, though. Catch up on some reading and hanging with my dog. Everyone have a GREAT Thanksgiving!
Turkey pot pie? That’s an idea. I was thinking I’d just have a bologna sandwich.
