Possible / Desirable to remove Quick Reply from non-last pages??

On a few occasions I’ve read thourgh the first page of a multi-page thread, then posted a reply. Only to discover my excellent commentary on someone’s comments near the bottom of page 1 has suddenly appeared on page 3 where it makes no sense so far out of context. Silly me, I didn’t notice there *was *a page 2 or 3.

Oops.

Which leads to my question:

Is there a vBulletin option to display the Quick Reply box only on the last page of a thread; IOW removing it from all earlier pages?

If the option does exist, does the rest of Doperdom have an opinion on enabling it?

Turning that on appeals to my sense of order; folks ought not post to threads they haven’t read all of, particularly long ones. And this change would remove the chance for dummies like me to make that mistake. OTOH, I suspect many people would consider that change a reduction in convenience.

Comments?

If you pay attention it shouldn’t be a problem.

I agree with the OP that it is a problem, and it’s not the fault of not paying attention.
It’s easy to miss, I think we’ve all done it.
But I don’t think the answer is to cut the quick reply on the first page. Often I will add to a thread that I haven’t read if it asks an opinion or wants your best limerick, etc.
I know the board never modifies these things, so your best bet is to go to the board software forums: Home - vBulletin Community Forum
My own suggestion might be for them to put the “page 1,2, 3” in the center instead of at the right, so people like me who have to zoom to read the page will still see them.

So let’s remove all the reply buttons from anything but the bottom of the last page, too. Oh, and unless you’ve clicked on and scrolled through each page of the thread, it doesn’t become clickable, you know like those annoying EULA things no one likes.:smack:

Right. Easy to miss if you’re not paying attention.

This is the best proposal in years. I hope it’s feasible.

“Pay attention”, like you’re not simply destroying the very foundation of this Message Board. This place would be boring as hell if we followed your advice.
Whaty’s next? “identify your biases and react critically to them?”

You seem to be the one not paying attention: the person above you already indicated that they have a bit of problem seeing. I assume impugning all people who don’t see very well as simply “not paying attention.”

I was this close to reporting it, as it was rude, regardless.

Well, I have trouble seeing — seeing text, that is, on a bright white background like this one. Especially with a font as ridiculously hard to read as Trebuchet. But in the immortal words of an immoral man, “Me, I get no respect.”

zOMG, you’re going to report me!!! Am I going to jail now?

Nobody’s impugning anyone. People who have to zoom have learned how to scroll. People who need to zoom have made this mistake, people who can see perfectly fine have made this mistake, I have made this mistake. This is not an issue than can’t be resolved by scrolling or glancing over.

Yeah, we’ve all done it. Which is why I use Quote when I want to reply to a particular comment, even one that I think is the last in the thread. Even if there aren’t other pages you’ve missed seeing, while you’re writing the post a dozen other people can be posting, again leaving your comment hanging irrelevantly in mid air.

Always use Quote in such circumstances, it’s much safer.

I can’t believe that no one has said that the Quick Reply button would be easy to miss if you didn’t pay attention.

Quick Reply isn’t a button, it’s the big reply box at the bottom of every page.

Let’s please put aside personal insults. “Pay attention” means different things and has different levels, and one doesn’t pay the same attention to reading a message board thread as one does to (say) driving.

I’ll check whether it’s feasible to put the POST REPLY button only on the last page. Then we can discuss whether we want to.

It is not the “Post Reply” button that needs to be moved. It’s the option of using the “Quick Reply” box at the bottom of the thread page. Post Reply takes you to a page that allows you to review the last x number of postings, so you can see that added conversation has occurred. But Quick Reply doesn’t allow that luxury, so if you missed the fact that the discussion has moved on to added pages, you end up being in late with old info.

Nooooooooo!!!

We need POST REPLY buttons on every page. The OP is talking about the Quick Reply Text Box at the bottom of each page. He wants it on the bottom of the last page only.

He wants this because he doesn’t see / notice /pay attention to — or however you want to put it — the fact that he is not on the last page.

Sorry, about the mis-reading.

Anyhow, it doesn’t matter much. The QUICK REPLY can’t be page-specific.

Okely dokely. (Used Quick Reply box.)
