“Double posting” usually means that the exact same post appears twice. Usually, this is a computer or server glitch of some sort. Sometimes, it’s because the poster gets impatient and hits the SUBMIT button several times. Sometimes, it’s because the computer-hamsters are just being crabby before their morning coffee. In any case, it’s not a rules violation, it’s not even a violation of good manners, it’s just one of those hiccoughs that sometimes happen.
Some people feel self-conscious about it when it does happen, and email asking a Moderator to delete the second post. I don’t quite follow this, since we all know it wasn’t an error that the poster had any control over, but what the heck, we’re happy to comply.
Sometimes, the duplicate post is the first post of a thread, so that a second identical thread appears. In that case, it certainly makes sense to ask a Moderator to delete or close one such, so that all responses are in one place.
That’s basically what is meant by “duplicate post.”
There is a variation where someone hits POST before having completed the thought. So, the person finishes typing and hits POST again. The two posts may start out similar, but then are different. Again, this is not a rules violation, and the Moderators are happy to delete the first (unintentional) post.
Anything else, there’s no problem. Posting two different content in the same thread, even right in succession, is not a rules violation. It happens. Even after previewing, you get another thought a few minutes later, and so post again. No prob, and no big deal. Yeah, there are a few people who may nit-pick at you for not being as well organized as they think they are, but that’s a small minority.
And, yes, agreed that someone who posts in response to every single other post, with a one-liner like “I agree” or “Right on!” or “I disagree!” or “No way!” with nothing else to add… well, that’s annoying but not a rules violation.
That help?
