Possibly a stupid question about double posting...

… but, anywho.

I’ve noticed a couple Dopers note in their subsequent posts that they have already posted before on that particular thread, and apologize for posting again.

What is the protocal for double posting?

If I start a thread, is it not cool to reply to others’ posts therein?

Should I avoid posting repeatedly to others’ threads?

What’s the straight dope on double (triple, etc.) posting?

Double posting means the identical post comes up twice. It doesn’t mean you can’t post to the same thread twice. If you have information that would enlighten or inform it is ( or should be ) our obligation the the great Cecil to post and post again.
Seriously, I think you may have misunderstood. Most threads are like conversations, if we were only allowed to post one time, the flow of ideas would be stiffled.

Perchance I did, but here are a couple of posts that drove me to post this query:

Merijeek

and, well can’t remember the others, but this is a representative example.

He posted twice in rapid succession, which isn’t really frowned upon, although it can usually be avoided by previewing, when it’s a situation like Merijeek did it (responding to a post made while composing his first post), or by being sure you’ve added all your thoughts before hitting ‘submit’, otherwise.

It is my impression from reading other posts where people appologized for posting in quick succession that on boards where one can edit one’s posts, editing one’s post is the preferred method of adding material thought of after hitting submit. In fact, making what could be a single post into two or three could be considered a form of “post count padding” another often frowned upon activity.

Here we can’t edit our posts, and I don’t see that posting in quick succession is a problem–except in threads where someone (Often but not neccessarily the OP) feels the need to respond to comments made by almost every other poster- often without having anything of substance to add.

The usual disclaimers (IMHO, YMMV) apply.

“Double posting” usually means that the exact same post appears twice. Usually, this is a computer or server glitch of some sort. Sometimes, it’s because the poster gets impatient and hits the SUBMIT button several times. Sometimes, it’s because the computer-hamsters are just being crabby before their morning coffee. In any case, it’s not a rules violation, it’s not even a violation of good manners, it’s just one of those hiccoughs that sometimes happen.

Some people feel self-conscious about it when it does happen, and email asking a Moderator to delete the second post. I don’t quite follow this, since we all know it wasn’t an error that the poster had any control over, but what the heck, we’re happy to comply.

Sometimes, the duplicate post is the first post of a thread, so that a second identical thread appears. In that case, it certainly makes sense to ask a Moderator to delete or close one such, so that all responses are in one place.

That’s basically what is meant by “duplicate post.”

There is a variation where someone hits POST before having completed the thought. So, the person finishes typing and hits POST again. The two posts may start out similar, but then are different. Again, this is not a rules violation, and the Moderators are happy to delete the first (unintentional) post.

Anything else, there’s no problem. Posting two different content in the same thread, even right in succession, is not a rules violation. It happens. Even after previewing, you get another thought a few minutes later, and so post again. No prob, and no big deal. Yeah, there are a few people who may nit-pick at you for not being as well organized as they think they are, but that’s a small minority.

And, yes, agreed that someone who posts in response to every single other post, with a one-liner like “I agree” or “Right on!” or “I disagree!” or “No way!” with nothing else to add… well, that’s annoying but not a rules violation.

That help?

Yes! Directly on point, thank you sir.

Oh, damn, what happened to my New Year’s Resolution to obfuscate and befuddle? … but you’re welcome!

Perhaps the ultimate double posting is a single posting which repeats itself. (well, at least partially). Yes, here is that infamous thread:

Since you are a relatively new SDMB member, you should visit that thread and you’ll learn yet another “in joke” around here. Just once … in 1960 … and not many people know that. (In-joke references to Moon and ocean exploration also started there).

You can’t break a resolution you’ve yet to make: New Year is 10 weeks away, so you’re safe for the moment!

[sub] Pssst! Rosh Hashanah was just a few weeks ago. [/sub]

Amen! You’ve got that right. :stuck_out_tongue:

I agree.
