With an ongoing show, based on a book, the spoiler issues are different. It is a spoiler to discuss differences when you are unsure that those differences will not be reconciled later. There is no such problem with, say, The Lord of the Rings. Game of Thrones is a rare phenomenon of an ongoing show based on a popular book series. And, rather than leave it up to others to decide what could be reconciled, we have decided to just declare a blanket ban.
I remember last year having to point out that what counts as a spoiler is decided by the people who don’t want to be spoiled, not the person in a position to spoil them. It’s perfectly natural for different works to have different ideas for what is and is not a spoiler. That you disagree with that is enough for me to say that you do not agree with me (or the current rules) about what a spoiler is.
Yes, I know that twickster often posts in a way that rubs people wrong. I would love it if she would try her best to be respectful. But, at the same time, you are quite acerbic yourself, and I don’t see why she should have to play nice if you refuse to do so, even when it was specifically pointed out to you that it was bothering people.
Calling people liars or claiming they don’t know how to read is not a way to reconcile yourself with others. (I’m assuming you do really know what “illiterate” means.) As long as you keep doing this, they don’t have any reason to try and understand the nuances of your position. As long as someone acts like a jerk, they will find themselves lumped in with other jerks.
I’ll put it in the simplest terms possible: I don’t think twickster should have to apologize for you being insulted until you apologize for calling people who disagree with you illiterate liars. You don’t get to insult people and then whine because you feel insulted back.
Simply mentioning the book is not a spoiler. It’s never been a spoiler, it’s not a spoiler in any way shape or form. No way, no how. So, saying that I am in favor of spoilers is a lie. It’s a Lie that they have to push and push hard, because as seen here, if I am just being a big meanie and wanting to spoil their fun, I am the Bad Guy. But in matter of fact- they are the one being the bullies. They HAVE to have it there way and only their way. They are perfectly OK with pissing on the rules by personal attacks, Junior modding and hijacks- because they expect the nerds and geeks to give them their lunch money as is the natural order of things.
The Unsullied (as others call them, maybe you like that better than the Illiterati simply don;t like to be reminded that the books exists and that the answers to all their nail biting uncertainty lay just a click away on a wiki page. Or for just pennies in a used book store.
And yes, not all my posts are respectful. I do not respect bullies. I don’t give in to them, I don’t kowtow to them, appeasing them is both morally wrong and useless.
But I am not a Moderator. They are held to a higher standard here. That’s why I posted this. That post was unsuitable for a poster, and completely out of line for a Staff member.
DrDeth, while we allow disagreement and dissent as a natural course of action on this board (around here if you have two Dopers, you can have three opinions), that’s not to be seen as an opportunity to slap at people who hold opinions or ideas contrary to your own.
At least not in About This Message Board. (There are other forum areas where you can slap at others and have them slap at you, but ATMB is not one of them.)
We get that you’re unhappy with the ruling on Game of Thrones threads. We get that you feel that you were not given what you consider your props in this matter as well.
That does not give you the unfettered right to insult other people – at least not in ATMB – and I’m going to ask you to desist.
I’m closing this thread. Do not persist in this endeavor in ATMB.
