That anyone on the left can say without qualification that the most liberal member of the Senate is a “centrist” reveals some interesting things about their political viewpoint.
Deep Space Nine reran the “Jadzia Dax lesbian kiss” episode last Thursday, so if you were wondering why Obama blew off that Town Meeting debate, well…
You left a key clause out of your sentence.
Whoever first predicted “whichever Democrat runs is always going to be called ‘most liberal’” deserves a medal or a prize or something. But that’s GD stuff.
That any publication would rank Obama as more “liberal” than Bernie Sanders reveals more about that publication’s lack of credibility than about any politicians it covers.
Bear in mind, also, that considering the historical and even more the current institutional tilt of the zillionaire-boys’-club that is U.S. Senate, for the most “liberal” member of it to be a “centrist” compared to the general American public would be utterly unsurprising.
Man, this thread just keeps getting funnier and funnier!
You agree with that other prominent political mind, Maureen Dowd, who wrote in her New York Times column on Wednesday:
You’re both wrong, to be sure. Obama knows full well that as the first black candidate he has to be perceived as twice as good in every way as any white candidate to appear equal. If he were to make John McCain’s jokes, 24-hour cable would have to add a few hours every day to make room for the outrage.
Obama is a centrist politician because he is moving to the center as he runs, just as McCain was a centrist politician in 2000 when he ran toward the center. This year he is moving toward the right as he runs, so he is a rightest politician.
I take my terms from the real world, not artificial ideological distinctions.
BrainGlutton, Bernie Sanders is a member of the House, so he doesn’t count when ranking the Senate.
You are mistaken about that.
I saw clips of Obama on Letterman. Boy howdy, that was rank. He can’t tell a scripted joke to save his life.
On the other hand, I heard Obama a few years ago on the radio, and he had an easy humor to him that was delightful.
Here’s a joke for Shodan:
What’s the difference between McCain and a lightbulb?
One of them is a wire in a vaccuum that is regularly heated by electricity. The other is a common item in your household.
Now we’ll see if he finds it funny. If he doesn’t, it must be hitting a little close to home!
Daniel
Oh yeah, if I was mistaken then who was I thinking of?
Barney Frank?
Oh, never mind.
And John McCain also places Obama to the left of Sanders.
 If only!
While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old Texas rancher,
whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor
struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around
to Obama and his bid to be our President.
The old rancher said, “Well, ya know, Obama is a ‘post turtle’.”
Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a
‘post turtle’ was.
The old rancher said, “When you’re driving down a country road
and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that’s a
‘post turtle’.”
The old rancher saw a puzzled look on the doctor’s face, so he
continued to explain. “You know he didn’t get up there by himself, he doesn’t belong up there, he doesn’t know what to do while he is up there, and you just want to kick the shit out of the dumb ass that put him up there.”
My teenager made an off the cuff crack about “What does Barack hope to hear every night from Michelle? Yes, we can!”
Hey, he’s just a kid, at least he was quick about it after seeing a campaign bumper sticker.
Tonya gets the first actual joke of the thread!
How does this have any reference to Barack Obama? What has he ever not earned on his own?
Relax. It’s one of the fill-in-the-blank jokes, and an amusing one at that.
No, but they - or at least I - found it plausible as a parody of something someone on the right might say about the guy. So it worked for me.
Sorry but when I read the “red” joke, I immediately thought red=republican, and was confused. Red= pinko running dog commie is a little 1993 at best, seriously. That’s pretty darn old school, and when I realized what was intended, rather than “har” it made me think “bleh, this joke teller must be ancient and staid”-- whoever said that the joke flipped attention to the teller was correct in my case at least.
The bum-change joke (first version) wasn’t bad.
here’s a cartoon about Obama that is funny, and makes an intelligent political statement.
(the cartoon shows Obama making a major foreign policy speech, with the caption:
ich bin ein beginner

Sorry for getting here so many days late. I don’t recall that joke threads ever belonged in Cafe Society. However, since we didn’t notice this until it was two pages long and three days old, I’ll let it stand.
I frankly don’t remember where joke threads go, but the Games forum seems reasonable for those wanting to start such in future.
Merely “moving toward the center” makes makes Obama a centrist? By whose definition (other than your own)? And in what sense is McCain moving to the right? It seems to me you haven’t established what the “real world” is beyond your own claims and your own artificial distinctions.
