He’s on the East Coast and going to a reasonably expensive college.
(I mention the expense only to note that he probably isn’t in any position to fly out anywhere. I learned more at the two cheaper places I went than at the, obviously, bigger-money place.)

Another here: I guested, never paid subscription and have been lurking constantly: reading and enjoying but never posting. Until now…
Another old member checking in. I used to post before the boards went to paid, then lurked ever since. Just found out today that I could post again, and that my old user name still works! Wow, this is neat.

Been lurking for about 3 years, every Monday through Friday. Was a paid member for 1 of those years but barely ever posted.
I found the straight dope by looking over the shoulder of a co-worker about 7 years ago. (I wonder if he’s here) I never checked out the boards until 4 years later after i had read all of Cecil’s articles. I’ve been hooked ever since.

I used to post when it was free, lurked during the P2P times up until about 3 months ago, when I decided to pay. If only I’d been more patient. :smack:
I also posted back when it was free, bought the first year of paid membership and then failed to renew. I’m hoping I get to search again, that was the function I missed the most.
I’ve lurked almost everyday since my posting years ago.

I paid for the first year of paid memberships, but didn’t renew when it expired. I wasn’t fundamentally opposed to paying, but I was beginning grad school and figured it was best to have one less distraction.
I did continue to read the boards regularly, but just reading is less distracting than posting! There have only been a few threads over the years that I felt really suffered due to my lack of participation. I did e-mail posters a few times to offer either support or information, but this happened only about once a year. So even after I finished school and got a job (and then left that job and got a better one) I didn’t feel it was worth paying to regain my posting privileges. Now that it’s free again, I’ll just have to put a little extra effort into moderating my SDMB time.
Wife and I moved here after I got a job … here. It’s spectacular. Really.
