The atmosphere in the caves was perfect for the waiting involved when you have to send eight people up a 60-foot rope one at a time. I sat and enjoyed being in the caves, relishing how damned cool it was that I was there looking at them.

It didn’t matter that they were not really extensive, or that they did not contain anything amazing. It was more than enough to realize just how amazing our journey had been. We’d traveled through five separate tunnel systems, twice using connections we’d created ourselves. We’d followed a route so unlikely, so convoluted, and so difficult that it seemed impossible to believe that anyone could would ever replicate it on their own.

I’m debating between “I used to think suicide would solve all of my problems, but your Daddy never had the guts to do it” or an alternate version: “I used to think suicide would solve all of my problems, but I could never talk your Daddy into it”. Both are actual quotes but I can’t decide which I like better.

context if interested: an email letter to a friend debating which is the better opening line for a story.

The problem with being Democrat is that if you vote for Obama, you’re sexist. And if you vote for Hilary, you’re racist. It’s easy being a Republican. No matter what you’re retarded.

Roland Arnall

Only the Telegraph has reported the death of Roland Arnall, former US ambassador to The Netherlands. He died at the age of 68, apparently of cancer.

His was an odd life, full of honor and controversy. Bornin Paris, his family fled to the countryside when the Germans invaded. They hid from their young son his Jewish heritage until the war. Later his family moved to Canada then to California.

In Los Angeles he lived the American dream, parlaying a flower stall into a real estate empire. He then moved into financing real estate, establishing Ameriquest, a firm which more-or-less invented the now-reviled “Sub-prime Mortgage.” When the firm collapsed four thousand people lost their jobs, thousands more lost their American dream and some huge fines were paid to regulators for violations.

While in California, he was an active supporter of the Republican party, raising millions for George Bush and Arnold Schwarzenegger. These efforts led to his ambassadorial appointment, one so awkward politically that the Republican-controlled Senate had difficulty approving it.

So the headline would be one of “Evil Republican,” but look again.

He was a charitable man. He helped establish both the Simon Wiesenthal Center and something called the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. While ambassador, he spoke repeatedly about the need for fair treatment for Europe’s growing minority of Muslims. In a final act of class and elegance, he resigned his position when his son became ill and needed his father’s full attention.

American lives, it is said, have only one act. He we see a life that had two distinct parts.

According to the Muppet Wiki, Big Bird’s species is often given as a canary, although, as RealityChuck pointed out, the bird himself once told Mr. Rogers he was a Golden Condor. The official Sesame Street website has no information regarding Big Bird’s species, but looking at some of the videos that are avaiable on the site, Big Bird himself states that he is an “eight-foot bird,” and also points out that he is not a giant or an aardvark.
