Since I enjoyed writing the nuclear war entry so much, I’m going to do another nasty disaster. So what horrible nightmare could happen? Well, there are dozens of different ways humanity could fuck up and destroy ourselves, though this one is nature-made.

Tsunamis. First off, the scenario I’m talking about won’t destroy the human race, but it will cause all sorts of Hell. Once again, thanks to Exit Mundi for information on this.

It’s a cool September day in New York City. The city is in mourning again, due to the anniversery of the 9/11 attacks. The mayor Bloomburg is reading off the names from the death list. Suddenly, a man runs into the crowd. He gets to the podium and yells:

“There’s a massive tsunami heading this way.”

People panic and run. Word spreads about what happened. The streets of New York become clogged. Within 15 minutes, the entire east coast is aware, due to the Internet and the speed at which news goes. Miami, Charleston, Cape Hatteras, D.C., Boston, New York, all are clogged in the mad rush to escape. A few hours later, reports come in of massive tsunamis in Morocco, Spain,
Portugal, and the southern coast of England. By around 5 PM that afternoon, the few people on the beach for whatever reason see the coast zoom away from them. The entire ground for hundreds of yards is exposed. Then they see it. A massive wall of water 300
feet high zips torward the coast at a hundred miles an hour. Storms don’t hurt it. Bombs do nothing. Nuking it would just make a tiny dent. The massive wall of water crashes on the coast. Buildings are flattened, forests are destroyed. Cars are tossed
like toys. Anyone on the coast is turned to mush and crushed by the weight of the tsunami. If by some miracle they live through that, they drown. The wave ends up going several miles inland.

And then, as fast as it came ashore, it goes back. The water recedes, taking with it everything. People, cars, pieces of buildings, trees, dirt, trucks, everything suddenly finds themselves in the middle of the Atlantic. A few hours later, the wave hits the
Caribbean, Central and South America.

The world economy suffers in coming months from the losses of the major cities. Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Havana, San Juan, Miami, Nassau, all the way up to Nova Scotia, and Greenland, along with England, France, Spain, Portugal, Iceland, and the west coast of Africa are destroyed.

What exactly happened, you ask? Simple. A landslide in the Canary Islands. In La Palma in the Canaries, there is a volcano called Cumbre Vieja. On the volcano’s western flank, there is a piece of land hanging by the ocean. If the volcano erupts, the land may crash down into the ocean. Many of you have seen the models where they dump gravel into a tank of water shaped like the coast. The result is always a massive wave. The same will
happen, only much larger scale. Tons of dirt and rocks will crash into the Atlantic.

Scientists only recently discovered that landslide make huge tsunamis, after it happened in Alaska. But there is hope. While it’s possible the next eruption of Cumbre Vieja could trigger this catastrophe, it’s also possible that the next fifty won’t cause it.
It almost happened in 1949, but the mass of land stopped after about 13 feet. It was the last decade of the century before they realized how close we came to complete
destruction.

So keep your fingers crossed, and for God’s sakes, don’t go to the East Coast.
