Later this year, I’ll be visiting a relative and I might inherit some antique (by USA standards) firearms eventually from them, probably sooner rather than later. I live in Chicago, so any thread that even hints about guns and mentions the name of the city of Chicago is likely to end up a train wreck even though some of these firearms were last used in the 19th century!
What’s the current policy on gun threads? I don’t want to junior mod a thread. All I really want is to get some current information about the legality of owning firearms in Chicago today as well as transporting them across state lines without a complete train wreck or debate number one million over gun control. They’re supposed to be of collectible value.
Thanks in advance, I could also post a thread about where to sell them, I haven’t decided which would be the better choice yet.
You can discuss pretty much anything, as long as it’s not illegal. If you’re not sure what is legal and what isn’t, you can discuss that.
This doesn’t mean that anything goes with any thread. We have threads that focus on pro-gun points of view and we have threads that focus on anti-gun points of view. The opposing view is off topic for those threads, regardless of which view it is. We have numerous threads on gun control debates. Just because a thread mentions gun laws does not mean that it is a thread about gun control.
It sounds like what you are looking for is a factual discussion of gun laws in Chicago and also regarding transporting weapons across state lines. This would be a topic for FQ. The gun control debate would be off-topic in such a thread.
Where to sell them and which is the better choice is more of an IMHO type of thread. You need to be very clear what you are looking for in this, because the default for IMHO is that everyone is allowed to give their opinion. Since you are looking for specific opinions about a limited aspect of this topic, that needs to be clearly stated so that it’s clear to everyone from the start that this particular thread is limited in topic and is not a general opinion thread.
In general, if you are inheriting a weapon and you are in a different state, the weapon must be shipped to a licensed FFL dealer, and you must pass a federal background check in order to pick the weapon up from the dealer. Dealers typically charge a small fee for this. Some weapons are not considered “firearms” and may bypass this check. For example, flintlock weapons, percussion lock weapons, and cap and ball revolvers are often exempt from this since weapons that have a separate bullet and powder charge are excluded from certain federal firearm laws. This doesn’t mean that you can ship your handy-dandy Model 1861 Rifle-Musket across any state line though. Many states have other regulations that apply.
Things like trying to bypass an FFL dealer or avoid federal background checks are illegal. You are free to discuss what is legal and what isn’t, but any discussion about how to break these laws or anything that encourages illegal acts cannot be discussed.
I just looked up the serial number for my Colt 1911 Government Model. It was made in 1917. It’s 108 years old!
I also have a Webley Mk. VI that was made in 1916 (I think), a Mauser ‘Red 9’ C96 that was made in (I think) 1916, a couple of Colt M1917s that I think were made in 1918, and a Winchester Model 92 that was made in 1897.
This should be in a thread about firearms, not in ATMB as it does not pertain to rules and moderation.
I don’t see where the OP actually started a thread anywhere, but if you can find an existing thread where this post would fit, let me know and I will move it for you.
