Pot smoke, again

If that’s directed at me, the garage door has two vents, one near each lower corner. Probably required by code, to prevent garage suicides or something. Every garage door around here seems to have them. Or for ventilation from when the house was built, when the garage was open to the rest of this floor, which was unfinished space.

This impresses me as a VERY civilized approach.

Just asking - as a lifelong asthmatic and former heavy pot smoker - what do you do when other pollutants irritate you? Do you use an albuterol inhaler? Often a cough drop is sufficient for me. Because if you have to take a puff of albuterol 1 or 2 times a week, that classifies this well into the “no big deal” category.

I honestly don’t think this is a good idea. It is just an unfortunate by-product of smoking marijuana that the smell and the smoke can travel so far and linger for longer than, say, cigarette smoke. And how far away would they have to go? They could already be at least one house removed from next door (only 25’ frontages here).

I actually don’t want my neighbors to have to tiptoe around because of me (and vice versa). So I am putting up with it, at least for now, because alternatives seem worse. We all live here and have to get along.

Chances are they would never see it. Other than that, the same issues as above apply.

Not quite. “Skunk weed” is a generic term for particularly pungent marijuana. Some people interpret this to mean the weed is particularly potent. Other people interpret it to mean that the weed is particularly cheap. There is also a breed of marijuana called “Skunk #1” that’s been around for a while. It has been bred specifically for potency, but that’s not particularly unusual - pretty much all strains of marijuana are being actively bred for increased potency, particularly strains intended for recreational use.

I’m guessing that folks who are taking marijuana to treat their asthma mostly aren’t smoking it.

As I mentioned, the air in San Francisco is generally very clean (all our pollution tends to blow over to Sacramento), and I am luckily not allergic to pollens. I have daily medication for my asthma and I almost never use emergency inhalers.

The asthma may not be relevant, the smoke doesn’t actually make me wheeze or anything, it just tickles my throat and wants to trigger coughing.

I live in a Chicago suburb. My issue is with a neighbor who enjoys fires. At one point I asked him to be aware to when the wind blows in my direction. He was pretty much of a dick - but his wife (since deceased) somewhat less so, and it seems to have been less of a problem since. I guess in my situation I could try to involve the cops/fire department, but I’d sure rather avoid going that route.

From what you describe - a single person smoking outside a couple of times a week, you sound awfully sensitive to me. I would consider it more of an issue - say - if you were in a condo, and a neighbors were heavy smokers, and the smoke travelled to your unit. Yeah - pot smoke travels. But be aware that you might come across as exaggerating the impact.

You choose to live in a big city, you have to put up with some inconveniences. (Until you move to the boonies and experience burning tires a la kayaker!). You say you almost never use emergency inhalers - well, maybe you should start. Or ask your allergist what they recommend. And figure out how to quickly close your windows and those vents when you catch the first whiff of smoke.

Like I said - I often experience throat tickles - and buy cough drops in bulk. Good luck figuring out what works for you.

Thank you for your unsolicited opinion and advice. And for parroting

a pretty fair approximation of what I said in an earlier post.

I guess your base opinion is that I should shut up about it, and not complain. Please feel free to skip all my future posts and put me on ignore, while I will feel free to rant about random stuff in the forum that is made at least partially for that purpose.

I would add something praising them for their consideration for smoking outside to begin with. Maybe offer to buy them a fan to push the smoke away from you.

I know OP wants to keep windows open so this might be a no-op. But if you want really clean air you have to make the place airtight and put in one of those fancy ventilation systems they use in Passive Haus construction, which can take the fine grade HEPA filters. Possibly air purifiers as well. There were places I lived that had a lot of dust, grit, exhaust and I wished I could afford such things. This only useful if you own the house.

One of the improvements we did make here was to get rid of our furnace and install a hydronic heating system. The water boiler uses natural gas, vents only water vapor, and gives us clean even heat all year long. We did that when we were doing other remodeling so the impact was much less. There is a lot less dust around, but still some.

I do not see a house-wide HEPA filtration system in our future, just so we can keep the windows closed. But I appreciate the suggestion.

Someone in or near my apartment building smokes it.

Skunks also live nearby.

I can tell the difference.

I’m a daily smoker and spend a lot of time out on our covered porch smoking weed. We have a very large lot and the neighbors on three sides smoke tobacco outside. I can’t smell them but I can see them. The neighbor who leaves his dogs outside to bark day and night (or howl and whine because its fucking freezing and they are cold) and refuses to clean up the dog shit covering his front yard demanded that I do not smoke outside because it was a bad influence for his kids. I told him to FOAD.

Another neighbor shared that she was in recovery and seeing me smoke made her want to go back to her bad habits which was why she closed her blinds every time she saw me outside. I made changes so she couldn’t see what was happening on our porch because I didn’t want her to have to sit in darkness.

It’s all in the delivery.

While I don’t have any asthma or other health related concerns, I can’t stand the smell of pot. About the only bad thing I had to say about visit to Seattle was smelling pot every single goddamn day and all hours of the day. And in the last few years, the smell of pot has become more common in the Little Rock area. I walk frequently for exercise, and while I don’t smell it every day, it’s not unusual to get a whiff of it when I’m walking through my suburban neighborhood or in the downtown area. The other day my neighbors must have been having a party while their parents were out because the smell was quite intense. (The kids are actually adults so I didn’t say anything about them toking while mama was at work.)

But I can live with it. You have my sympathies though.

I don’t mind the smell of pot - to the contrary, I quite enjoy it - but this is one of the reasons why I prefer vape pens, as they don’t give off the skunky odor.

My next door neighbor (apartment complex) likes to leave his front door open and puff both cigarettes and pot like there’s no tomorrow. I detest both that skunk-ass smell and the pot culture. Also cigarette smoke. I haven’t said anything because frankly he looks sick enough that I think it actually is medical marijuana plus he seems to have a violent streak judging by the way he yells at his visitors.

I just aim my box fan at my front door a lot.

Wait, what? We’ve got a culture?!

The culture that claims pot can cure everything. That claims pot isn’t a drug. That makes pot their entire existence. Yes.

Ah, well, those 3 guys won’t bother you if they don’t leave their dorm room.

Ahhhh, cannabis culture. Gotcha.

I think he meant pot lack-of-culture.

At my age, I’m talking about that 1971 “culture”. Actually, throughout this thread I keep thinking that, even though I don’t smoke it, the smell of marijuana is extremely nostalgic.
