So, I’m watching Pirates of the Caribbean 3, it’s a noisy, poorly written, ‘lets see how we can make it bigger this time’, typical end to a trilogy (until they go searching for part four, I guess.)
However.
The Scenes with Jack alone in Davey Jones’ locker has go to be one of the most interesting bits of Cinema I’ve seen in awhile. (I don’t see a lot of cinema) I appreciated that the viewer was left a little out of kilter, initially, then left that way while it got a bit surreal …then we left the scene without a whole lot more than ‘the guy’s a nutball on a bunch of levels’.
I certainly liked it more than I thought I would when I initially heard of the “multiple Jacks” storyline, but then again there isn’t much that Johnny Depp can’t pull off.
I was more disconcerted by the complete abandonment of every single character arc that had been established up to this point. Elizabeth, who craved freedom, is stuck on an island. Norrington, who had become delightfully Evil in the second film, is now a complete wuss. Governor Swann eats it in like the first half an hour. Will…is boring, that’s pretty much the same I guess. And Jack ends up in, literally, the exact position he started the trilogy in.
I liked this movie okay when I first saw it. Since then I’ve rewatched the first two and grown bitter toward this one.
