Um, yes! No, wait. Maybe?
Looks like the OP got eaten. But if he’s saying what I think he’s saying:
AOTC - $400
HP - $320
LOTR - $315
Maybe he was asking which if the three we thought was best or would see again. At least, that’s what I’m going with.
I wouldn’t go see any of them in the theater again. I will probably rent AOTC when it comes out on video and I will probably catch bits of the other two when they come on tv. The desire to rent Potter/LOTR just isn’t there, simply because I can always just pick up the books at the damn library.
Aarrgghh! What happened??
Well, yeah, I was addressing what Bankie and WSLer said. Basically, who won, monetarily and quality-wise.
You would have to pay me to see HP or AOTC again, whereas I would happily see LOTR again (and I’ve seen it 3 times already, as opposed to once each for the others).
Naturally, AOTC will make more than HP & LOTR:TT in domestic b.o. for 2002, but I’m willing to bet that Spider-Man will make more than any of them here in the States (though probably not in foreign markets).
If you want to throw Spider-Man into the mix…hmm…
Well the dark side clouds everything, but all of them will be $300 million plus. Again HP and LOTR are at the end of their domestic box office runs, so I stand by those figures.
For AOTC, I’m gonna revise my guess. AOTC, while much better than TPM will probably not surpass it since people seem jaded. I know that won’t see it as many times as I saw TPM even though it’s 10x the movie that TPM was. I’m just not feeling the hype for it, so I’d say it’ll end up $250-350 million. Probably it’ll just break the $300 million mark.
Spiderman, somewhat suprised me with how well it’s doing. I’d say it’ll end up at around $360 million.
Quality-wise, I’d rank them as LOTR, Spider-Man, AOTC. I haven’t seen HP and don’t plan to. I have no interest in it. I’ve seen LOTR 4 times (not planning on seeing it any more), Spider-Man once, and AOTC once. Strangely, I had more fun at AOTC than Spiderman, so I’ll see AOTC 1 or 2 more times, but I’m not gonna see Spider-Man again.
wait, AOTC II??? Is that episode 2.5? i knew Lucas couldn’t explain everything!
I’ll buy HP next week when it’s released on DVD. I’ll buy LOTR when the 4-disc set is released in November. And I’ll even eventually buy AOTC next year. I feel LOTR is the absolute best of the three, but I think HP will make the most money if you count DVD sales.
Yes and no. There are rumors that Fellowship of the Ring might be re-released again a month or so before The Two Towers. I’m not sure how succesful it’d be, but it’ll be something. Also, if you want net numbers rather than gross, you’ve got to remember that the numbers usually cited for FotR include costs for all three movies, but ticket sales for only one.
Spider-Man, I thought was very good, but I probably won’t be seeing it again in the theaters. I’ve seen FotR three times and Harry Potter twice, and I haven’t seen AotC yet to judge. Admittedly, one each of the viewings of FotR and HP were in the cheap on-campus second-run, and if Spidey does come to the campus theater, I might see it again.
I think, for the purpose of this thread, that we look only at the movie’s initial run. After all, HP1 will probably be re-released when HP2 comes out.
We’d be here forever if some endpoint wasn’t established.
well…
i’m just going to state my favorite out of the 3, as seen in the theater.
due to a large quantity of acid and “shrooms” taken by me and several of my esteemed collegues before our entry into harry potter, and our subsequent adventure while watching said movie, i must say that harry potter is by far the best movie i have ever watched in my entire life. ever. ever ever ever. if nothing else, it is the best simply for the fact that at no other time in my life have i seen a movie theater with blacklights, disco balls hanging from the ceiling, and a gorilla playing in the corner.
i’m also going to take this time to apologize to all the other patrons in the theater that nice november evening. i am deeply sorry for our yelling, laughing, screaming, and our stumbling into the movie 5 minutes late giggling like litte schoolgirls.
harry potter indeed.
Quality-wise, LOTR is the obvious winner. I saw it five times and (if I can find the time) I’ll probably see it again before it leaves the budget cinema.
I think the test of time will probably tell. Harry Potter will be remembered as a well-known and well-liked kids film, but no more; AOTC will be remembered as part of the Star Wars series as better than TPM but worse than the OT; Spider-Man will be forever played on cable and well-liked but not classic (like the Batman and Superman movies).
LOTR? Instant classic. Hopefully the fantasy genre will take off a bit now that it has been proven, and we’ll see a lot more (lesser) films, but LOTR will lead its genre for a long, long time.
I’m for LOTR all the way. Spider-man was fun, but not really amazing, AotC likewise, and I didn’t see HP, and I don’t plan to.
LOTR is a no-brainer for #1. It’s not even close.
- AOTC
- Spider-Man
- HP
I haven’t seen Spiderman or HP (plan to see the former, don’t plan to see the latter), but I do know that LOTR is better, quality-wise than AOTC, and would speculate that it’s better than with SM or HP.
