POTUS sends 2,000 National Guard troops to L.A. to handle ICE protests - 6/7/2025

We all know this is just to show how lawless California is, right? That if this happened in a Red state, there’d be no federal troops unless requested.

I can’t find the clip now, but a reporter asked Trump what crime Newsom had committed that would warrant his arrest. Trump’s answer was, “he ran for governor.”

The U.S. president typically cannot order the U.S. military to engage in domestic law enforcement, but there are exceptions.
** The 1807 Insurrection Act allows states to request federal assistance and allows the president, in limited circumstances, to deploy military personnel in the U.S. without a state’s consent.*
** President Donald Trump did not invoke the Insurrection Act in a June 7 memo that deployed the California National Guard to Los Angeles. He cited a federal law that says if the U.S. faces a rebellion, the president may call into federal service the state National Guard.*

This is trumps “justification”

That’s a great antidote to all the “L.A. WOULD BE BURNING DOWN IF NOT FOR TRUMP” the right (FoxNews etc.) is trying to sell.

It’s ridiculous, of course. But they never let facts get in the way of a good story.

So, which is it? Is the whole L.A. metroplex up in flames, with rioters on every street corner, or is most of the violence so far being committed by the troops and police?

So far, I’m going with the latter. Gotta say that the taxicab in flames makes for some good background footage.

Santa Barbara County just 32 people to assist

Not sure if it’s okay to augment the topic by citing deployment of troops in other protest cities.

“Abbott sends Texas National Guard troops to San Antonio ahead of protests”

(That would be Texas Governor Gregg Abbott)

The governor’s spokesman says soldiers are “on standby.” Protests against immigrant arrests are planned for Wednesday and Saturday in downtown San Antonio.

I have friends who were planning to attend the Saturday protests. They’re old like me, so not sure if they’re rethinking it.

I’m not sure how many people I’d expect the sheriff’s office of a different county to send. Probably zero.

They are helping to guard buildings from being damaged so they are helping the LA sheriffs and specifically not ICE. It’s pretty common to provide mutual aid for disasters and unrest.

Santa Barbara in general being pretty quiet, (excluding local college town Isla Vista) perhaps those sheriffs looking for some overtime. Wait till Montecito riots!!

I’m on the Westside, and, yeah, it’s very quiet here. Though I did see on our NextDoor that ICE snatched the fruit vendor who works at the CVS parking lot at Manchester and Sepulveda.

I’m from Mar Vista but I left in the early 80s.

Clarington at Palms, me. I moved up here in December 2003.

Fantastic speech by Gavin Newsom on the situation:

There’s actually a lot of county outside of the City of SB (who has their own cops). Regardless, I am certain that they took volunteers and it’s pretty good pay.

Gavin Newsom was, I think, starting his 2028 presidential campaign with his speech.

I assumed that was a part of the intent @Dewey_Finn , and while I have people I’d prefer, if (a huge IF) he can generate some wider appeal, and actually make any sort of productive stand against Trump, I won’t begrudge him his personal ambition either. We are in desperate need of someone who can capture the imagination and encourage (non-violent) resistance, rather than the current milling about and/or doom-crying (with cause mind you!) as the Authoritarians remain united under their orange-hued autocrat.

Perhaps Newsom can be the one to lead the Democratic Party out of the wilderness. Certainly they need someone to do so.

I certainly hope so. He hit all the right notes:

Lay out the situation and how Trump was at fault

Strongly condemn the violence and destruction that did occur, promise consequences

Remind everyone that Trump caused this to escalate much further than it would have otherwise

Praise the peaceful protestors

Denounce Trump again

Really, really good speech.

Well, it certainly won’t be DNC chair Ken Martin!

He’s been running for President since before Covid. This is a good opportunity for him.
