Right, most likely, the order Trump gave was just what it says in the OP: “Handle the protests”. The more detailed and specific orders actually given on the ground will be given by someone both more competent and less evil than Trump. I’m sure Trump is expecting and hoping for violence, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to get it. And he’s too cowardly to directly order violence.
Now, his ICE agents, they probably would interpret an order like “handle the protests” as an order to start violence. They’ve been hand-picked for that mentality. But he doesn’t have enough of them, which is why he’s using the National Guard in the first place.
I have a lot more faith in the National Guard than I do in the police.
Thanks. Of course, if Trump can take credit for things Biden did that worked well, say it’s Biden’s fault that tariffs have ruined the economy and so forth- this is acceptable and appropriate behavior.
I remember how badly the camera man was harmed when they were told to clear the way for trump to have his photo op at the church. I have a good deal of concern and wish the protestors would just sit quietly with arms linked or something. I support the cause of the protestors just not the tactics because I have very little faith that things won’t go very badly. It’s what the president wants. Good excuse to declare Marshall Law. We’re no South Korea and I think he knows that.
Im in Valley Village, CA. Near Burbank and Sherman Oaks, so no raids or protests in our burbs. But I fear the feds are just looking for any excuse to tear gas or worse. The idiots that torched a car last night are partially responsible for the NG to be deployed. Another one of those and…
And just when you thought that Trump and the Pubbies couldn’t possibly get any worse…
It’s headline news here in Australia, with live coverage (it’s app 8am Australian Eastern Time). Horrifying scenes, I too hope that things de-escalate quickly. Not holding my breath though.
The Los Angeles Police Department declared the protest outside the Metropolitan Detention Center an “unlawful assembly,” and authorized “use of less lethal munitions.”
Not directed at anyone specific - this thread is a weird hybrid of P&E and Breaking News. It’s going to be very easy for us to go off-topic, express our feelings in extreme ways, or go far into gallows humor. I am taking this moment to remind everyone of that, and ask we all keep it in the back of our minds while posting, so that we all get the most out of the thread. And if you have to express Pit-like feelings, there is a current Pit thread on the same events.
I am afraid that this is going to end badly. I have the impression that Trump likes
to use force and that this will escalate to the point where several
people may get seriously hurt or killed.
So far it’s quiet here south of the 91. My thanks go to the mods for keeping this
discussion from going off the rails.
I pronounce it ‘Kit-lah’. Now that I’m 1,200 miles north of L.A., I usually look for KTLA links for L.A. news. Question: CBS affiliate? I thought the CBS station was KCBS on channel 2. (IIRC, NBC was channel 4, and ABC was channel 7.)
I’m watching the CNN TV coverage live. At some point in the last half hour or so someone said something about the Guard personnel having assault rifles. The implication was that we’re talking live ammo. I’m sorry I can’t be more definitive about what I heard. I hope like hell I misinterpreted what I heard.
Those National Guard members called up are likely to be California residents.
Not that this doesn’t mean some of them are prone to Trumpian “them versus us” thinking about protesters, who may be likely to be Spanish speakers. Of course many of the California National Guard are Spanish speakers, too.
I pray that Donald Trump is thwarted, today. He’s trying to get us used to the use of force against US citizens. He’s trying to get us used to the idea that HE can declare any situation an Insurrection.
Good grief. The police line is moving forward on the highway and tossing smoke or gas grenades at the protestors – but protestors are kicking the cans back into their lines and the wind is blowing the gas back at the cops.
