They don’t need all 77.3 million, All they need is a critical mass willing to do Donnie’s evil bidding and for the rest to fail to stop them.
Most Nazi voters weren’t, either. Had you asked people who voted in 1933 for the Nazi party “do you want all Jews and several millions others as well rounded up and murdered in gas chambers or just machine gunned to death” almost everyone would have said “Jesus Christ, no, that’s crazy.”
It doesn’t happen all at once.
It’s precisely because I’m Jewish, and have experienced burning antisemitic hatred, that I don’t think that anything more than a fringe of MAGA is filled with that sort of hate.
I’ve had plenty of interactions with people who detest Jews and want to see them dead. I’ve not met a MAGA person with that kind of hatred for Hispanics. I have met MAGA people with that kind of burning hate for LGBT people, but only one or two.
Yeah, I don’t know what your neighborhood is like, but the MAGA supporters here believe dumb shit about the level of corruption in the Democratic party, or about vaccines; and they might have untrue ideas about crime rates and immigration. But they don’t have a burning hatred of Hispanic people. Actually, Hispanic people are pretty overrepresented among the MAGA supporters I’ve come across.
Since my initial statement was that I don’t think that more than a fringe of MAGA supporters are hateful in this way, I’m not sure whether you think you’re disagreeing with my point here or not, but if that was meant to push back against what I’m saying: it doesn’t disagree with it at all.
So they are not all truly evil and indistinguishable from Nazis, then?
That’s as the only part of your statement I pushed back against. I don’t disagree that the hateful, violent fringe is a problem that can influence policy in a very negative way.
They’re precisely equivalent to the Nazis. Not all Nazis were actively involved in running the death camps, either, but they were all fine with a government who was running death camps. And there were enough of them to keep that government in power. Remember, the Nazis were the largest political party in Germany. Lots and lots of people were Nazis.
This for sure. I have a BIL that I get along with just fine. But he voted for Trump. Is he a racist bigot? I donno. But I think his son is.
I don’t know how it came up, the subject of clothes. Jeans in particular. The son said “Only fag’s wear Levis.” ummmm… what?
This. I don’t think the majority of people who voted the Nazis into power were in actively in favor of death camps, either.
And elderly Germans i spoke to the first time Trump was elected said the parallels to Hitler’s rise were striking and terrifying.
How is the scene there today?

I’ve had plenty of interactions with people who detest Jews and want to see them dead. I’ve not met a MAGA person with that kind of hatred for Hispanics. I have met MAGA people with that kind of burning hate for LGBT people, but only one or two.
OK.
Guess we have different MAGA populations.
I have personally heard MAGAs in my area express wishes for removal from US, great suffering, and/or death for the following:
Immigrants
Muslims (often confusing Sikhs and Hindus with this category)
Hispanics
Chinese (I suspect they mean “all Asians outside of the Indian sub-continent” but it’s not like I engage them in extended conversations.
Trying and executing for treason all Democrats
And expressed wishes for returning to slavery all Black people and, as they put it “Mongrels” by which I believe they meant “mixed race” people. Also various punishments for White men who f*** women in that category, usually lumping them in with the sex offenders (suggestions ranging from jail time to castration to execution), for White women who f*** Black men and/or produce children with them (usually jail time and permanent separation from any mixed offspring) and for Black people who f*** White people execution (usually hanging, but a few have opted for Biblical stoning)
Then again - the town I live in used to be a “sundown town” for Blacks and some of the older residents want a return to that. And I’m only 20 miles from the town that used to be the headquarters of the KKK. Not quite as much Jew hatred here…although the above sorts of bigots have expressed that they believe the role of the Jews is to act as cannon fodder in their end-times myth and suggest that everyone would be happier if every Jew in the US was deported to Israel. Also the usual antisemitic bullshit about how even those of us who were born and raised here and whose families have been here for generations “aren’t really Americans”. Presumably (again, I don’t engage for details) because we’re not God-fearing Christians.
I’m guessing they also hate LGBTQ+ people but they don’t generally bring that up in random conversations with strangers. At least, not with this stranger ::: points to self ::::
Fortunately few and fringe in my county. At least at this point. But I’m still a little amazed by what some people will spout off to the cashier at the grocery store under the assumption that if we share a skin tone we also share the same religion, politics, and hatred for others.
I have mentioned this many times. Mom’s friend Helga said before Trump’s first term “He reminds me of Hitler.” Both Helga and her husband had lived in Germany during Hitler’s rise to power. They eventually ended up in one of the camps.
Her words are more and more terrifying with each passing day
Yup. I heard exactly the same thing, but from Germans (German Germans, not Jewish Germans) who grew up in Nazi Germany.
Moderating:
We’re getting somewhat off topic with the discussions comparing MAGAs to Nazis. The comparisons have been made many times before and there are many better threads to continue those discussions.
Let’s all please try to stick to the subject at hand, which is the incident of Trump’s decision to send National Guard and Marine troops to the Los Angeles area to confront protestors. Thanks.
Sending U.S. military troops against our own citizens? This would be an insupportable action by the government and would lead to serious repercussions. If I was still in the military, I would refuse to obey such an order. The NG is bad enough, especially when it’s called out by POTUS on the flimsiest of reasoning, but active duty Marines is crossing a serious line.

I do not see how arresting Karen Bass would be a fail of enormous, or any others, proportions.
You do know she certainly has a security detail that would do everything they could to prevent Bass from being taken into custody? At the least there would be a confrontation with whoever tried to arrest her. It would be a huge fail for this regime.
What prevents DJT from invoking the Insurrection Act? He has the fig leaf of a national emergency which, as he sees it, is his right to call without being questioned- just as he cites trade deficits as a national emergency to become the soul judge and jury on trade policy.

You do know she certainly has a security detail that would do everything they could to prevent Bass from being taken into custody?
If the FBI showed up with a valid arrest warrant, I doubt that her security detail would either fight them off or try to escape with her. Actually, I highly doubt she would even ask them to do such a thing.

If I was still in the military, I would refuse to obey such an order.
I am not doubting you personally, but the absolute fact is that if the military is ordered to act against the citizenry the number of soldiers who will refuse to obey will be between zero and insignificant. The notion that the noble US military will proudly refuse such orders is absolute nonsense. History clearly demonstrates that soldiers/Marines/etc. go along with their orders.

What prevents DJT from invoking the Insurrection Act?
My guess is he’s being advised to wait and do that later.

My guess is he’s being advised to wait and do that later.
Yes. The people pulling the strings/pushing their agenda with the willing puppet know that it’s too soon.
It’s not just about the troops on the ground, it’s also about all the officers in between the president and the troops. There are a thousand ways for officers to subtly challenge, delay, or otherwise sabotage orders they believe are illegal. Based on many articles and books written about Trump’s first term, he routinely got furious about flag officers dragging their feet to carry out questionable orders.
Still, I wish Russel “Weapons down! Weapons down, damn it!” Honoré could come out of retirement for this one
