Tuba Diva, I would just like to compliment you on your kind-hearted acceptance of the Going to Hell in a Handbasket thread. We need more moderators like you. Some moderators rule their board with a heavy hand leaving no room for expression or creativity. I won’t name any names (but it’s the GQ moderator. You do the math)
And now for practice…

I’m sorry, but I was raised in a home where we were very open about our culinary activities. But nevertheless, in the future, I’ll try to be more courteous of those of you who haven’t had the benefit of my upbringing.
And tell Hank, if he wants a piece of me, just name the time and the place. I’ll whoop his ass, not kiss it, then I’ll take his million dollars.
Our moderators do a damn good job under what sometimes are very adverse circumstances . . . and if one of them, in the heat of battle, should be a bit snappish, well, I’m sorry, but it bees that way sometimes. (I’ve been that way myself. Today even.)
In fact, most days, most everybody else will cut you tons more slack than I will; I’m usually the one that gets accused of being a meanass. (And usually it’s true.)
The mods are all volunteers. They are unpaid, except for a Straight Dope coffee mug. You become a mod by spending enough time posting here so that the Administration knows you aren’t Ted Kaczynski, and then by volunteering.
TubaDiva is a saint, but not one of your namby-pamby, halo-wearing, vegetarian, “wouldn’t hurt a fly” saints. She always puts me in mind of one of those Medieval saints who puts on a hair shirt and goes about doing good among the poor, sometimes wiping their noses, yes, and occasionally drying their tears, but definitely smacking them upside the head when it seems like they need it.
Tuba, no doubt about it, you’re a real mean ass, ass, ass, as much as I like.
I’ll chime in with DDG and add that over the approx four years I’ve been hanging around (on AOL and then here) you guys do a mostly thankless (at least from the teaming millions) job, and do it well.
Thanks, Tuba. You’re truly one the reasons I’m still around. But watch out making that offer, someone might take you up on it!
At the risk of taking the thread too far off topic for this forum, I’ll say that I do wish I had more time to contribute to the boards.
I derive a fair amount of fun from hanging around here, and consider this to be a community of friends I’m privileged to be a part of. But very few would recognize me as I post very little. This seems like cheating, taking without giving back.
But time has not been my friend, especially in the last couple of years. And frankly, I’m not a great writer who comes up with the kinds of posts the others love to read. So I chip in a few times a month, when I have time and the knowledge to answer something or a comment to make. And the rest of the time I just enjoy the place.
So anyway, thanks again to Tuba and all who keep the place up and running, and to all the posters who make up the shape and flavor of the joint. The occasional nut jobs notwithstanding (they’re fairly easy to ignore) this is a good place.
