In case you didn’t notice, the Mods put together an “In Memoriam” sticky dedicated to all the late lamented Dopers.
I think it’s a good idea, too, but Mimi and Reeder have “BANNED” under their names. I think we should probably unban them at this point.
About the time I was first lurking there was another well-loved dude, whose death came as a great shock, but later there were doubts?
There were, and they were apparently justified. He’s not on the list.
My only problem with the list is that it is in MPSIMS, where I rarely visit. For instance, I didn’t know Reeder had died because the original Pit thread was moved before I saw it.
Without reopening any old wounds, I made a comment in Clothahump’s thread about only including deaths that were confirmed. I said that for a reason.
dropzone, I think MPSIMS is the best place for that sticky. That’s where threads about illnesses and deaths usually go, so it makes sense for the sticky to be in the same place. And the forum description does include things like “life changing announcements.”
it is a good idea. thank you for thinking of it.
I saw the thread yesterday, but was too busy to comment.
Thank you for the sticky, Marley23.
very good idea. thank you.
The idea actually came out of Clothahump’s thread. He suggested a subforum for the tribute threads and we decided to go a slightly simpler route and do this. Like I said in the other thread, some entries are more complete than others and I’m happy to take suggestions.
Are there no threads announcing the passing of Dirty Devil, Mimi, indecisive1, and barracuda?
None that I could find.
I’m not sure of the point of this. I’ve no doubt that the post does not constitute an exhaustive list of the Dopers that have died in the last ten years. Perhaps it shoud be titled "Dopers who have off-line MPSIMS friends or who lived long enough to gasp out, “Tell the SDMB…”
I mentioned Barracuda’s death in a thread wherin I pitted the disease that claimed her life: Multiple Sclerosis. We were married on April 2, 2007 and she died on July 31, 2007.
I’m sure it’s not complete. I took the entries from some recent threads about posters who had died, and there were a few with health issues who have been gone for a while - A.R. Cane posted in mid-2008 that he had been given six months to live, for example, and he hasn’t posted in a long while. We’ll never know about all of it. But we’ve got what we can. People have asked about stuff like this for a while and I think it’s a nice gesture.
I disagree. Oh, well. I’m not, as I think is apparent to all by now, an MPSIMS type.
When I die, y’all will just have to assume that I chose not to post anymore.
I was just wondering if their dates could be posted next to their names in the list…

Originally we put deceased posters in the “BANNED” category to keep anyone – even well intentioned family members – from using the registration. That’s what happened with Mimi and she got lost in the mists of time.
Since then we have added the “Posting Sabbatical” option where living members can take a break from the board and are not able to post during that time. This seems a much more appropriate category for these special situations.
Now everyone who has left the building should be listed as a “Member.” They’re on Posting Sabbatical.
I think it is a good idea and done in the best way possible. A new subforum would be too much. The sticky can be easily ignored if you don’t much care.
I’ll be sure to keep an eye on obituaries in Missouri for anyone named Frank. I’ll be sure to let everyone know.
Two other confirmed names, although I’ll leave whether or not they should be added to the list to higher powers:
Toymaker He didn’t post much post-AOL on the new board, but some of his posts do survive. He did post a good bit more on Opal’s board. Once SDMB went off AOL and let all the riff-raff in, a lot of the AOLers went elsewhere. You know how it is. . . “There goes the neighborhood.”
A snippet of his obit
FixedBack another AOLer. I don’t recall whether or not he posted on the post-AOL board. If he did, his id has been lost. He did post a good bit on Opal’s board, though.
This is apparently a press account of his suicide. (If you’re not a subscriber–and I’m not–you have to pay for the article.) It’s been archived, but it’s no later than April 2007. Long story short: He’d had a number of health issues and ended up jumping off a bridge. This looks like a Connecticut website, so maybe someone can find a new account of in elsewhere. I think his name on the AOL site might have been BrknBack or something like that. But it’s been a long time, so I won’t swear to that.
Thanks for that. I’ve updated the sticky with those two names.
