Heavens, I’m in the same boat. My niece wants to see this, and her Mom’s all, “Snicks, you’ve been talking about taking her to see a movie for a while…” Clearly, it’s time for me to step up and do my auntly duties. We’ll be seeing it in a couple weeks.
We saw it last weekend. It wasn’t so bad. There were a few cringeworthy moments. But Celtling stayed in her seat the whole time, which is as high a praise as can be given for a kids movie. It had to be quite engrossing at the 4-year-old level for that to have happened.
Azaria was brilliant. And NPH was quite good. Weird to see him in a less comedic role, but he did it very well. The cat had us both giggling.
The only thing that bothers me is that the mean boss lady gets what she wants, instead fo what she deserves. “Keeping the boss happy even though she doesn’t deserve it will ensure your own happiness” is a life lesson I’d much rather have put off for twenty years or so. . .
My kids wanted to see that yesterday but we had an ace up our sleeves- they’re going to a birthday party next weekend, and the birthday girl wanted it to be her big party activity, so they’ll see it then. Saved.
However, we ended up taking them to their second choice- Zookeeper. I chuckled at one line (which I now forget, so it wasn’t that great), but otherwise it only reinforced my studied opinion that talking animal live-action movies just plain suck.
Nothing can be as cringe-worthy as Gnomeo and Juliet.
I nearly threw up from how bad it was.
I watched this, voluntarily, the other day on VOD. I have no idea why. But contrary to my expectations, it actually wasn’t the worst movie I’ve ever seen (not sure what would be at the top of that list, but Paul Blart:Mall Cop is probably pretty high up there).
If I had kids they probably would have enjoyed it. I was at least mildly amused. My GF was quite entertained when she came home and found me watching it. She went in the other room until it was over.
I bought it on dvd and I’ve watched it probably five or six times since then. It’s not my favorite movie ever but on a saturday afternoon when there’s nothing on but golf and half-hour blender commercials it’s one of those movie I’ll throw on for background noise as I do chores or play computer games.
I loved the smurfs growing up and I avoided this movie for a long time because I thought it would suck so bad that I’d end up hating the smurfs. I guess my very low expectations is what made me think, “Huh, that wasn’t so bad.”
I do like Azaria as Gargamel and I like how they made Clumsy the main smurf character.
I was totally gobsmacked after it was over when I read the credits and saw who played Papa Smurf.
Cat vs leafblower still cracks me up. . .
Oh, the Nac Mac Feegle?
I had to look it up while I was watching because at moments it almost sounded like Leonard Nimoy.
What’s so strange about Jonathan Winters? I thought Jeff Foxworthy as “Handy” was much more surprising!
