I’m not sure they were taking a moral high ground. Probably just thinking about opening weekend. Few people were still holding a grudge against Tyson in 2008. The dust hasn’t fully cleared from Gibson’s latest debacle.

This was already addressed. Tyson’s conviction was 18 years ago, and he did his time. Gibson’s stuff is still fresh (and he was already on his second chance anyway). It’s not so much a moral distinction as a PR distinction.
Mel Gibson should announce publicly that he is leaving acting behind, possibly to pursue a career in music. Then he could do a documentary about his situation…
