Prejudices, stereotypes, and dreams – a far-too-serious MMP

We are all so cheerful about having to work this morning! On the bright side, my split shift got rejoined so I get to work eight hours, go home and not have to worry about coming back until tomorrow.

Blurf.

Missed the 8:15 bus by a couple of seconds because it was early. I was literally opening the front door as it whizzed by… grrr. So I guess I shall catch the 8:30 bus instead.

{{{mmmmmmmmmm and swampus and Taters and STG and anyone else who’s frustrated with work/life/whatever}}}

Just look on the bright side. It’s HUMP DAY! Wooooo!

You are? I always thought you were a rather homely looking woman. :stuck_out_tongue: Plus with a name like ----, that sort of reinforces my beliefs. :D:p (Just kidding dear, you know I love you.) :D:D

This morning is more difficult than I generally like. I sent GilaMonster off with breakfast and then I started to eat a couple of sausage links that I had reserved for myself. That’s when I noticed that it wasn’t cooked all the way through despite being cooked in a skillet and then microwaved for good measure. :smack: So I had to call GilaMonster and have her come back. I then nuked it and it was 185F and rising when I poured it back into the pan. Now GilaMonster is on the ride of her life to get it there (hopefully) on time. I called the client to tell them what happened just in case she runs into traffic, but I hate it when I screw up and it makes us look bad. :dubious:

Ok, now I’ve got to go figure out if we, in fact, have anymore baked beans. I forgot that I needed them today and I’m not sure.

Back later with better news, I hope.

That is a lie!! damned lie!!! I’m a hot red-headed woman, and you know it!!!

Or not… :dubious:  At least I’m really a red-head. I guess if two out of three ain’t bad, one out of three is, still, barely, adequate… :o

I didn’t know you swung that way… :stuck_out_tongue:
(Hey, I wasn’t the one writing I love someone I think is the same gender as I am… :D)

(My real cite that I’m male is the **Swampy **always seems to be flirting with me :))

Blurf. Missed the last couple of days on account o’ … well, I just did. Lack of sleep making me perpetually meh, mostly I guess, but I got to bed at a more respectable hour last night, so I’m feeling better.

That was a great OP, Mom. I still see lots of prejudice and superficial judgments even now, though mostly it’s of the institutionalized, ignorant stereotype variety rather than outright hostility, but I expect it’s the sort of thing that will still take many years before it recedes to a background level. (For I don’t think we’ll ever be entirely rid of it; ignorance is a hardy weed, something I am sure we more than many understand.) I am ashamed to admit that I hurled my share of racial epithets when I was a kid. I was a product of my environment (though my dad isn’t racist by any means; it was my peers) and really never even thought about what I was doing. Fortunately I grew up, and this moran got a brain.

So anyway, I’ve really gotta get off my ass and find some motivation to get moving on some projects. I’ve been a terrible procrastinator (that is, the degree of my procrastination has been terrible, not that I’m bad at procrastinating – I’m quite good at in, in fact) and I’ve just lacked the motivation to do anything about it. I hate that. Time was when there was a project I wanted to dig into I’d waste no time and plow into it head first. Now that I’m older, not so much. They should invent a concentrated motivation pill. Like Viagra, but for the will rather than the willy. I bet they’d make a killing.

Yes, I did, and yes, we’d like to come, but we’re trying to figure out when. Maybe this Saturday? I’m busy Sunday and next week we’re loaning the kid to my parents and escaping for the weekend.
Nat’s nicer today. He’s conditionally forgiven.

Mr. Anachi’s teefies are much better this morning. He’s already pretty much “done” with eating soup. And, no, I did not chomp on a T-bone while he could not…although I drew the line at soup.

noonie, I don’t know if you are burly enough for swampy.

mork, get started on that new attitude tomorrow.

Good work vibes going out to all who need them.

Tupug

Howdy all. I am late to this party, but definitely prejudiced - primarily against loser, fool drivers who think the small space on the dashboard between the instrument panel and the window is a footrest, who change lanes without indicating and frequently without regard to the drivers in the other lane, who tailgate anyone and everyone and flash their headlights at you to indicate that you should get out of their lane (even in heavy traffic) and who, amazingly enough, almost all drive cars with Saudi licence plates (coincidence???).

Anyway, the major annoyance for me is that, even though I only live 10km (~6mi.), it takes me over 30 minutes each way commute for work. Sigh … A country of only 1 million people and over 400,000 registered vehicles. This is the result of a (virtually) non-existent public transport system that is, in any event, shunned by the local population because only South Asian labourers use it and shunned by white/European expats because the route network is indecipherable and so shockingly incomplete as to never go anywhere close to where you live or work!

I got word from the Aussie Gynae. Oncologist today - definitely not having a hysterectomy any time soon. Just need to schedule another round of day surgery (LLETZ for those who care to know) but this time at home in Brisbane, so I also need to book my flight, schedule time off work and borrow some more money from work to cover treatment costs (until the a$$hole insurance company sorts itself out).

Rosie’s sig to all for now, until I manage to go back and actually digest everyone else’s week so far!

LiLi, Saturday would be lovely. The cats have been looking a little chubby lately, and running away from a rambunctious toddler is exactly what they need to work off some of that blubber… Just send me a note when you know for sure and we can sort of the details.

{{Dotty}} Glad to hear things are progressing, but not so glad to hear that the insurance company still has their collective head up their collective ass.

PM me an address ----- I’ve been married so long I have an open account at Pollack’s!
Bigotry still confuses me somewhat. Up our part of the mountains we just never thought of such a thing. We were all poor enough and just surviving that you simply never looked past the hand reaching out to help to see who it was attached to. I think - just think - that assuming is a “creature of wealth” --------- that those with a certain level of money have the time to ponder and assume things while poorer folks barely have time to act or react.

The example I always use is the “McLaughlin sisters” back home. (No - that isn’t the real name but its close - some things should be left private and personal) Two ladies who lived together all their lives in this little place on the edge of Pringle. One “sister” was Scandinavian and the other Chicano. Were they our resident Lesbians? None of us gave a flying frik - it wasn’t until after they had passed away that I ever heard anyone speculate about it one way or the other. What we did know for sure was that any time someone was sick and needed cared for or looked after, the two of them were right there to handle it. And God have mercy on the “city people” who trespassed or bothered them in any way because we sure weren’t.

Which brings up the one bigotry we did have ------- city people. We called each other all sorts of names I can’t type here. All were taken in fun and laughter; at most you may have gotten a noogie of your shirt pulled over your head. Fighting words were prefaced with “Philadelphia”. Call someone a “Philadelphia hunter” or “Philadelphia Driver” and fists would fly for real.

Ahhhhhhhh - tis a strange creature we humans are.

Is anyone else having this Castle Anthrax flashback? No? Just me? Oh well.

::: zoooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmm :::

Honk, honk!

Only if you have a British landline. Which I’d have had to pay over 50GBP/month to get, as it has to come bundled with the supahdupah TV service which I care SOOOO much about. You know, like, I totally can’t live without… uh… eh… ah! Without Britain’s Got Talent, that’s it. Can’t live without Britain’s Got Talent. Totally.

I may not be a native English speaker but if I’m allowed to say so myself, I do think my Valley Girl is definitely good enough for TV scripts.

Why is lapin blanc apologizing for sharing good news? I think it’s great that you got a raise!

Muppet, let us know when you start on the book signups

We had a session today with two recent graduates from my program talking about their careers. When I mentioned my language pairs they were like “oh, that pays like shit… you want to do inverse? Nobody will hire you for inverse!” (actually, yes, people DO pay me to translate into English)… until I said “well, I’m technical, I’m an engineer”. Apparently being an engineer who translates isn’t quite as interesting as having Polish, but it does have the power to move you from the “pile of trash” list to the “keep in mind” list and get rates above mendicity levels.
I’m now seriously considering applying for a EU translator job, having heard how much they make and that they do, indeed, have a serious need for “engineers who translate” (although it will have to be into English or into Spanish, rather than into-anything-else, as I’m a lot more limited in the languages I can write properly than in the ones I can read properly).

**Dotty **-- good luck with your medical issues, and in your War Against Insurance…!

I sure hope not!

You’d get to see Susan Boyle! Surely you wouldn’t want to miss that…?

Oh, it was last year and you missed it? And I shouldn’t call you Shirly…?!

Well, *gag *me with a spoon!

Good to hear your translation skills will be in demand!

Excellent news Dotty! Thoughts and prayers and good vibes for day surgery in Brisbane.

I was home before 5.30 tonight which I don’t think I have ever done. I never seem to be home before 8.30 or 9PM lately.

My asshole tolerence level is severly diminished right now. I will be OK we all agreed in the office today that we should just start drinking at lunch

Prayers headed out, Dotty. And sorry about the terrible drivers. I’ll tell Mr. Lissar about them next time he complains about Toronto traffic.

Argh. Nat needs a special kind of insulin specifically mixed for him at the pharmacy at the Hospital for Sick Children downtown, and the damn phone tree won’t let me speak to a human being. Also his meds only last two weeks, so we have to pick it up twice a month, after pre-ordering four days in advance.

(Sound of head banging into wall)

blurf.

It’s like the Flood over here. Luckily I don’t have to drive anywhere. Unluckily, I have to walk in it.

I FUCKING HATE MY JOB AND LAZY-ASS PEOPLE WHO ARE TOO FUCKING SELF-ENTITLED TO DO THEIR OWN FUCKING WORK AND EXPECT TO BE BABYSAT!!! YOU received the fucking funds! You knew there were performance metrics and that those who funded you expect this EVERY DAMN YEAR! I am not your fucking servant. I have a job, am buried and it’s not my fucking problem you sat on this shit for a week and now expect ME to finish YOUR SHIT in two days. I have all kinds of other command emphasis projects going.

I AM GOING TO SNAP!

ARRRRRRGGGGHHHHHH!

Deep breaths Taters. Deeeeeeeeeeeep breaths. And an adult beverage or two this evenin’. Remember, a murderin’ rampage might sound good right now but the opportunity to drink later will be the better choice.

So, Special1 how you doin’ you sizzlin’ hunk of Israeli man flesh?

dotty appropriate/inappropriate appendages crossed about the insurance mess.

That’s all I got for now. I’m sure there’s other stuff to comment on but my brain is kinda mushy right now and can’t concentrate.

Later Y’all!

Special blended Insulin LiLi? Thoughts and good vibes headed your way for the little one as well for the logistics of that whole deal!

Taters I feel ya…deep breaths and vent here.
