Actually, the original meaning of “sock puppet” was a second screen name that a poster would use to support his/her own arguments, hence the image of a puppet. It has been extended to mean, at least on this board, any additional screen name besides the primary registered one, whether banned or not.
When having a sock puppet is outlawed, only outlaws will have sock puppets.

I believe (I am open to correction) that even members in good standing are not allowed more than one account.
Dare I confess it? During the Winter of Our Missed Content, I registered under a different name (rs0522, IIRC) because I thought my Shodan account had been lost. I e-mailed the moderators, who corrected the situation, and I have not posted under that name since.
But I don’t believe one needs to go posting support for yourself in order to get banned - that kind of split personality is verboten in and of itself. I think.

I did not imply in any way that anyone was permitted more than one account. I was merely trying to explain the origin of the term “sock.” Since it is spelled out in the registration that more than one name is not permitted, it goes without saying.
From the Registration Agreement:
More than one screen name, for any reason (unless it was done as an honest mistake, and you notify the admin so they can nullify the second one), is grounds for banning. Once again, check the registration agreement if you are unsure of it.
