From m-w;
So, any progress on trimming these ol’ boards?
Peace,
mangeorge
We are currently debating just how much trimming would be necessary for the blazing speed you crave. Jerry the Tech God says we would probably have to delete all of 1999 AND 2000 before we saw anything meaningful and in a very short time, due to the volume of the board, we’d have it do again. Most of us are not willing to give up so much.
The situation is still being studied and in the meantime we’re doing the best we can.
While I sympathize with anyone who has to bear the brunt of complaints about the speed of the board, the 4.2 seconds should be placed in context.
I read this thread earlier. Then I tried to come back and post when I was feeling frustrated by the slow response.
At 10:05 I clicked on the Message Board link from the main page. It took 1 minute 54 seconds to show the Forum choices.
I then clicked on ATMB. I got the menu in 4 seconds.
I then clicked on this thread. I was connected in 1 minute, 53 seconds.
Tuba–if this has been asked and answered, I apologize but here goes–
If the searches on the search engine by posters are responsible for even half the problems, then why can’t the search engine be relegated to a separate server? Then people who are simply reading posts and replying can enjoy that 4 second response time.
Again, I apologize in advance as I am sure this has been answered but I didn’t want to tax the board by searching for a previous post.
That’s not how this system works; besides, we don’t HAVE a second server. Y’all keep thinking we have money and people to throw at this situation and we don’t, we just don’t. I’m as frustrated as everyone else, perhaps more so because I see firsthand in my own experiences AND I field the complaints.
I’m sorry the board is fractious; sometimes it goes incredibly fast, sometimes it bogs down. We’re working on trying to make the system run as well as it can as fast as it can under the circumstances that prevail.
Am I wrong or isn’t there a separate server for the “search archive” and other things like “Weird Earl’s”, “Threadspotting”, etc.?
I assume you meant that there is only ONE SERVER for the message board.
If there is another server for all the things I listed in my first paragraph, then the search feature of the Message Board COULD be put on a separate server. You just don’t have the money for a “third” server. At least, for one that can do the job.
To the best of my knowledge, the board is on a server all by itself. The columns and other stuff is on another server, but I don’t think that’s reserved strictly for us, the Reader does other stuff on it as well.
Note that M-W specifies “without undue delay”. All the delay you get when waiting for a thread is, indeed, due delay.
Many folks have suggested putting the search on a separate server, but I can’t see how this would work, even if we had the extra server to play with. Either the search server would need to query the main server’s hard drive for the database, using just as much time as the current server does (more, actually, because you’d have network delays), or the main server would have to continually mirror the database to the search server, thus approximately doubling the non-search portion of the load.
The OP reminded me of a manager where I used to work who, despite constant reminders from me that all requests had to have the “date required” blank filled in with an actual date, would give me work to do with “ASAP” written in as the date required.
Finally, I began moving all of his requests to the bottom of the stack. When days went by and his new staff person still didn’t have a logon ID, he came to my door fuming. Why wasn’t I getting to his requests as soon as possible? I made him understand that when I get a request in that has today’s date on it as the date required, I do it that day. When I get a request in that has tomorrow’s date on it as the date required, I do it today if I have time, and tomorrow if I don’t. When I get a request in that has “ASAP” on it as the date required, I’ll do it when I don’t have anything else to do. That was as soon as I could possibly do it, given the prioritization I had to follow to get my job done.
Thanks for the reply, TubaDiva. I was just joshing you folks a little. I was feeling frisky when I posted, and the board was especially slow at that time. Too much coffee, I guess.
I appreciate the work you do for us. Really, I do. And you sure can’t beat the price.
Peace,
mangeorge TubaDiva yelled at me. How cool!
There’s an implied social contract here. You’re supposed to get all lathered up, have a snit, get told to take it to the Pit. You do. Then you have a complete melt-down.
That’s what’s supposed to happen when TubaDiva yells at someone. Instead, however, you’ve just called it “cool” and been rational about it.
You’ve broken the social contract, and the eventual outcome is inevitable. When the board decends into anarchy and chaos, I’ll know who to blame.
