President Joe Biden and the runup to the 2024 election

Same thing happens with many bad ideas- the bad idea fails, so the reasoning goes the idea was not big enuf or bad enuf, we have to try again.

Again, my question is why does the border need to be secured to such an extent? We are not worried about Mexico invading. And please note- the Maginot line did not even work to secure that border.

Note the the Maginot line cost around $4B USD in todays money. trump wall would cost about $20B.

The border is not insecure, the problem is 100% policy based and requires immigration reform. People are coming to the border and asking for asylum, this is completely legal. While they wait on their court date they get work permits, court is massively backed up so this takes years. Coming to the US and getting a work permit for a few years is already a win for them so it encourages more people to come, leading to longer and longer wait times. It doesn’t even matter that the overwhelming majority of those asylum cases have zero chance at being approved, most of the people coming don’t even understand that. Border security has fuck all to do with any of this.

The problem is that due to the GOP they DON’T get work permits, so us Taxpayers have to support them.

And

This is a feature, not a bug. when they finally get their much delayed work permits, they do nasty dirty jobs Americans don’t want to do, keeping farm and ranch produce cheaper so we have cheaper grocery trips. They pay taxes, and they pay into SocSec- with little hope of ever getting any of that back. This keep SocSec secure.

Let them come, give them permits- fine by me.

But but but!!! You don’t understand. Those people are Brown! We can’t have more of that. /s

Exactly. They aint talking about a wall in the North, are they?

In fairness, very few, if any, Canadians would be inclined to illegally immigrate into the United States. They might not even want to do so legally.

I can’t recall the source but I recall reading it would be far more than that - perhaps to the tune of $80-100 billion.

I read where the number of undocumented Canadians in the U.S. is in the low six figures. So, not huge, but not nothing.

Personally, I’m in the camp that says do some background checks and let ‘em all in, so I wouldn’t care if it was a million.

True, but the border is "not secure!!!"

why not?

Another view on the Biden-is-too-old issue, from the LA Times: Column: In praise of gerontocracy

Excellent article. I especially liked this bit:

I may start echoing that on this board at appropriate moments.

I’d like it better if they defined “gerontocracy” and “omphaloskeptics” (a word that fits into that thread about pretentiousness IMHO) in the article, but that bit of laziness aside it’s very good.

They want to predict 2024 elections by polling. Well, the best predictor we have is the 2020 election. Trump keeps telling that Joe Biden has led the country to ruin, yet we don’t see the ruin. I think we can pretty much leave Joe out of the polling as any significant factor. Joe is boring, though he has started to wag his finger about democracy and autocrats. So the question is, has Trump gained any voters? I don’t think so. The email lady is not running and Hunter Biden is not running either.

So, going to Michigan results: Popular vote 2,804,040 Biden 2,649,852 Trump
I don’t think Trump has gained any voters there.

Georgia: Popular vote 2,473,633 2,461,854
Very close, election hour and district tampering could lower Biden turnout. Tossup.

Arizona: Popular vote 1,672,143 1,661,686 Tossup

new Hampshire Popular vote 424,921 365,654
Percentage 52.71% Biden 45.36% Trump
Not going to change.

Nevada: Percentage Biden 50.06% Trump 47.67%

And so on. Click the state in the map to get data.

By that logic, Trump should have won reelection in 2020, and GHWB in 1992. The country’s political dynamics change in four years - sometimes quite a bit. Incumbent Presidents have significant advantages, but they are not and never have been assured a second term.

But Trump. After 4 years he only had chaos to present. After 3 years of Biden we have…boredom. If the GOP had a new candidate to present, Biden could easily lose. In with the new, out with the old. Trump can’t offer that.

I only wish you were right. Dubya failed to prevent 9-11 and got us into two wars, and then got even more votes in 2004 than he had in 2000 - the outright popular-vote majority that eluded him the first time.

Two wars = boredom? Not to mention environmental issues and abortion legal battles.

Anything looks boring compared to an insane carnival barker con man hopped up on adderall shouting unhinged lunacy in our faces every day. Its the same way that any day seems boring compared to the day you were attacked by a rabid wolverine on cocaine.

The US isn’t directly involved in any wars, and astonishing numbers of people don’t actually give a daily thought to what’s happening in Ukraine or Gaza – let alone how Biden’s action or inaction affects them.
