President Joe Biden and the runup to the 2024 election

Well, is that optimism, or what? Vlad is looking for more lebensraum for Russia to revanch, and Alaska might show up in the dim sum trolley. And, as ridiculous as it sounds, he could be sniffing around the creation of greater political instability for the imminent election.

‘What’s Alaska ever done for US? Vote Trump! The Peace in Our Time candidate!’

At least Neville Chamberlain didn’t abuse bronzer.

Vlad is having enormous difficulty invading Ukraine, which is right next door, shares a really long land border, and is mostly nice and flat. Trying to invade Alaska, which is at the wrong end of the continent from Russia’s main forces, across a significant body of water, and just about as mountainous a place as you could find? Yeah, I’ll worry about that later.

Except I wasn’t directing my comments to younger progressives. I was making an example of how right wing/MAGA propaganda infects the national dialogue. In fact, the people from whom I most often hear the “Biden is too old” meme are my own peers – and I ain’t no spring chicken.

You chose to address your response to the subject of the example and fair enough, but you missed my point.

My point is how easily the propaganda seeps into the discussions we have around Biden’s viability to be reelected as president. I could just as readily have used the memes about how ineffective he is as a leader, how he is responsible for high inflation, how he got us into 2 wars – none of which is true. But because of right wing propaganda and how efficiently it is disbursed, those are the discussions citizens are having around the 2024 election.

The problem is the supercharged propaganda, not the Democratic candidate.

And he carried his own umbrella.

Well, sure something could come up. But I stand by my point- currently the USA has no wars.

Well, there’s that thing going on with Yemen but I don’t think that counts as a “war”. And the Houthis started it.

It is hard to understand why Biden’s age would be a reason to vote for someone else.

However, I do know why I’d be fine with Biden being younger and Trump older.

Biden is a moderate Democrat, and I’m a moderate. So I want him to have a firm hold in his own administration. It’s easier to do that when you are a bit younger.

Trump is, by inclination, an autocrat, so I want him to accomplish as little as possible. His age makes it less likely he’ll succeed in the difficult job of consolidating power.

Is there any possibility this is why Biden is apparently more hurt by his age than Trump? On the one hand, few think as I do. On the other, I did hear family saying, in 2020, that Biden was the only Democrat they could halfway trust.

Another suggestion: Other than the true believers, Trump voters are hoping the soup is cooler when slurped than when being cooked. So Trump slowing down is a good thing to them. By contrast, they may find the idea of Biden slowing down, and then possibly being controlled by progressives, alarming.

Larry Kudlow, of all people, has most likely put Fox News and its discerning viewers in a bit of a tizzy with the following sacrilege.

Those are two slightly separate issues: Biden’s age, as a human being, and Biden vs. Trump. I have concerns about Biden’s age but I will certainly vote for him against Trump. (Or against any Republican at this point.)

Concerns about his age are mitigated by his staff and VP. Concerns about Trump are not mitigated by anything.

In principle, Biden’s age and mental acuity are definitely of concern to me. He doesn’t seem as sharp as he was ten years ago, he sometimes slurs his words, and the White House staff seems to be trying to minimize his exposure to the public.

But in the real world, Biden as a slobbering senile wreck would still be far, far better as POTUS than Trump as he is now or will be for the next four years.

I liked the president’s dedication of the Blatnik Bridge over Lake Superior yesterday. For the untold distractions he has, he spoke smoothly I thought. I think he liked the symbol of uniting the country with bridgework and the executive branch’s financial commitment to do that.

Are we still optimistic? Most of the kids aren’t exactly fans, these days.

Sure, they would like someone younger, maybe a minority. But they wont vote for trump.

I saw an interview with the head of the UAW the other day. He said that ‘the large majority’ of his union members are voting for Trump.

The Democrat’s shift to identity politics is killing them with blue collar workers.

This guy? From yesterday?

“That’s why 75 percent of the American public stood with the UAW in our fight. And I believe that’s why a huge majority of our members and working-class people will side with President Joe Biden in the upcoming election.”

Fain added he believes the percentage of UAW members who vote for Trump will be less than it was in 2016, stating, “And I believe the overwhelming majority of UAW members and working-class people, when the facts and the truth are put in front of them, will support Joe Biden for president.”

His remarks come just days after the UAW formally endorsed Biden’s reelection campaign.

The literal opposite of what you said?

That’s not what I was talking about. His lack of progressive accomplishments and the Gaza/Israel conflict is why his numbers are poor with younger people.

No, it wasn’t from yesterday. It was a couple of weeks ago.

Here’s from over a week ago:

UAW president criticizes Trump but says union not yet endorsing Biden

UAW President Shawn Fain declined to comment on reports that President Joe Biden may address members of the union in Washington later this week during a legislative conference or issue its endorsement.

Fain told reporters his personal view of Trump’s track record “and who he is as a person … is pretty much contrary to everything we stand for.” Fain said the UAW would hold formal discussions on its endorsement “and then we’ll go from there.”

And this is from back in September.

But sure.
