President Joe Biden and the runup to the 2024 election

What this also means is that if Trump wins this year, he may reap (during 2025-2028) the benefits of whatever good policies Biden has been enacting during 2020-2024. Which could make Trump look good further yet and Biden worse.

The economy was better for a while, but the well over 1 million Americans dead through covid means they were quite a bit worse off. Not to mention hours of work lost, and many businesses closing down. All because trump didnt believe in science. Experts says anywhere from 1/3 to 2/3 of the deaths could have been prevented.

Already proved not true-
Who Won The Debate? | FiveThirtyEight.
Debate watchers were pretty decisive in their verdict of last night’s performances: Only about one-third said Trump’s performance was “somewhat good” or “very good,” and 50 percent said it was “very poor.” Biden’s performance was more positively received, with around 60 percent saying they thought he performed well. Respondents gave more mixed grades on how they thought the candidates outlined their policies, but Biden received better marks here, too: Almost 60 percent said they thought his policies were “somewhat good” or “very good,” compared to about 40 percent who said the same for Trump.

This is a perfect example of the unreliability of witness memory, Biden won the debates in 2020. And that was with trump cheating constantly.

Oh, trump might, but only with “rule” that give him a huge edge. I guarantee trump wont allow the moderator a “kill switch”.

Probably not.

I’ve proposed before that debaters be required to post a sizeable bond ahead of time, with money going to your opponent’s campaign whenever you go over time after a single warning, calculated by the second. It would have to be a large enough amount of money per second that candidates would clearly understand it’s just not worth going over, even to try to get the last word in.

But I highly doubt Trump would ever agree to debate under those circumstances.

IIRC the RNC has already put out its 'rule" that would heavily favor trump.

He allowed it in the final 2020 debate.

In my opinion, if Biden is ahead in the polls, as was the case in October 2020, Trump will have no choice but to roll the dice and agree to debate under the Commission on Presidential Debates rules. I cannot find 2024 rules but expect there will again be a kill switch.

Even if the polls are tied, Trump still has to debate, because you lose votes if you show yourself unwilling to debate. Sitting on a lead is only sensible when you have one.

As for Biden, his history of success in debating Trump means he will also agree to this distasteful task.

I am of course posting as if Trump is a rational clever person, which I know is controversial here.

Every time I hear one of my coworkers say they don’t want a raise because it’ll put them in a higher tax bracket I want to grab them by the collar and start screaming in their face.

Just tell them you’ll take their raise. The hard part is getting your mutual boss to agree.

(Johnny Carson voice) I did not know that.

Not under RNC rules, Biden should not.

Rational? It is to be doubted. Clever? He was a pretty successful con man for decades, so he must have been clever.

The Commission on Presidential Debates makes the rules.

Trump likes drama and will play the ump by insisting on rules changes. Except perhaps for something quite trivial, Joe could not agree even if he wished — it is up to the commission.

One qualification: Trump may not attend all three scheduled debates. Skipping one heightens the manufactured drama.

I wouldn’t have thought it possible, but Trump’s mental acuity actually seems to have declined significantly since last election. If he shows up to try to debate Biden, it will be only because his ego demands it of him, and over the frantic objections of any competent professionals on his campaign staff.

Sure. The problem is, to stretch the analogy, that Trump’s audience and Biden’s audience are judging by different criteria. Biden’s audience wants to see who is better at chess. Trump’s audience wants to see who is better at flipping the board over and scattering the pieces everywhere.

Pretty funny that after the weeks-long, bad faith freakout over Biden’s age & mental sharpness, Trump is genuinely sundowning in front of us, even at his own trial.

Exactly. Which is why we’re in the mess we’re in.

Yes, but last I heard the RNC was saying it wouldnt play except by their own rules, and IMHO the Commision should tell them to go to hell. The handbasket is totally optional.

Very possible. Once a con man either believes his own con, or finally they catch up with them, bad things occur.

That’s playing the ump.

In terms of getting Biden to play by their rules, it will not work.

I can maybe see one benefit of playing the ump this way. Suppose that Trump decides not to debate, probably due to some combination of sitting on a lead and knowing he’s a bad debater. This is going to hurt Trump by making him look like a scaredy-cat. But having played the ump would slightly reduce the hit.

Disagree. I think Trump’s base would see that as Trump giving the middle finger to “the establishment” by refusing to play by their rules. If it does go down that way, IMHO Biden should play that off as a nothing-burger, making a short statement to the effect of “I’d have debated him if he’d have agreed to it. He didn’t, so there won’t be any debates” and then move on to talking about other aspects of his campaign.

The base will vote for Trump regardless. We may disagree on who will decide the election. I think, as always, it will be median voters in no one’s base.

Biden has no choice except to do that. The Commission on Presidential Debates tweaks the rules in response to what went right and wrong in previous debates, not what the candidates dictate.

The thing is, though, that the opinions of these groups about the debate don’t really matter. What matters is the people who are really “undecided”. I don’t understand how those people actually exist under the current circumstances, but they do exist. It’s how they respond to the debate, and the debate about the debate, that really matters.

The difference between Trump and Biden will be dramatic. If it sways enough swing voters, it will also be decisive.

So any decisions that Biden makes should be in light of this.

Biden should bring an air horn to the debate, and give Orange Foolious a blast every time he tries to talk over him or shout him down.

So Biden never gets a chance to speak, you mean? He’d be blowing the thing nonstop.
