President Joe Biden and the runup to the 2024 election

A recent CBS poll has the marijuana amendment currently at 56% to 30% with 14% undecided. The abortion amendment is 60% to 20% with 19% undecided.

Florida passed medical marijuana in 2016 with 71% of the vote. That’s an incredible margin!

56 to 30 works out to 65% already. If the undecideds split down the middle or even trend slightly negative, it would pass.

Saw this on mastodon

oooh -snap! Shows that Joe is still sharp.

also, compassionate

Speaking of Philly, he had a stemwinder of a speech there. (16 min)

Godammit, Joe, talk about Joe, not some random felon. Make it about YOU. You can address the things he says, but simply stop talking about him. Treat him like he is insignificant, not worth mentioning. You are just giving him free pub.

I’m not sure I disagree, but there are many (including some here at the SDMB) who firmly believe the path for Biden to victory is by trashing Trump at every opportunity.

I’ll raise my hand for that. IMHO he does need to attack Trump more, but he needs to do it in an effective manner. Forget about getting into the weeds about specifics of a case. Biden doesn’t need to be talking about Stormy Daniels, or classified documents that ended up at Mar A Lago, or things of that sort. He needs to make it clear that Trump is an evil person who wants to turn the United States into a dictatorship, who doesn’t care about real American values, and who, contrary to the slogan, wants to Make America Suck Again, not Make America Great Again. Biden needs to say that Trump is a shitty human being, that he only cares about hurting people he hates and enriching himself, and that he doesn’t actually care about the average American.

As compassionate as that question deserved.

Joe has been campaigning and it simply does not move the needle. There is no magic message concerning Donald Trump that will give a bump in the polls.

I believe that he has been working on the war in Gaza, in general, and specifically on getting American hostages released, every day since October. And his speech today, about a path forward there, sounds very hopeful — not just because of Biden’s words, but also because, so far, Israel and Hamas are making positive comments about the plan. Now, it could fall apart. And it almost surely won’t go smoothly. But he is competently doing the job he was elected to do. I think that’s the only messaging — the messaging that comes from doing his job well — that matters.

If a believer, pray for the hostages for their sake. And if you can’t do that for likely Zionists, do it because nothing could help the Biden campaign more than welcoming released American hostages.

Ohio has passed a bill allowing Biden to appear on their ballot.

There will be some long term changes from Trump. The disintrest in the world affairs is clear. The Ukraines will get some support in the next 10 years, but the long term effect is that the leading role of the US military will gradually go to a small level. As small as Trump’s mushroom. All the macho posturing that the MAGA folk are doing with their Brandons and flags will quickly be gone.

These are fun. From the NYT Opinion section, “Time Flies When You’re Being Convicted,” June 3, 2024 (excerpted):

Bret [Collins]: I’d advise him to own up to his supposed weaknesses and repackage them as strengths. As in:

  • “I don’t have a cure for everything, but I know that bleach isn’t one of them.”

  • “I sometimes forget the names of foreign leaders, but I didn’t forget my oath to the Constitution.”

  • “The only person who hates the idea of Trump losing more than Trump is Putin.”

  • “Stormy Daniels isn’t my type. My wife of 47 years is.”

  • “Whaddya want, a little bit sleepy or full-blown crazy?”

  • “This election isn’t just a choice. It’s a choice about having a choice.”

  • “I might lose, but at least I’ll admit it.”

Something like that. Or is that all too negative?

Gail [Stephens]: Love them all. And let me toss in one more: “Biden’s Got Guts, and He’s Not Nuts.” You know, I could really imagine your choice slogan on TV this summer.

Bret: OK, so here’s another: “Restore reproductive rights. Abort a second Trump term before it’s too late.”

Gail: Definitely agree with the sentiment, but I suspect there’s a better way to sell it…

Coming back around after six long decades.

In your guts, you know he’s nuts

trump has shown he is the sleepy one.

I’d prefer we not judge Ms. Daniels by whether she’s someone’s type. (directed at Bret Collins, not Elendil_s_Heir) I am fine with some jabs at Trump for his encounter with Stormy while married to another woman.

He’d be paraphrasing Cheeto Mussolini with that remark, so I think it’s fair play.

“Stormy Daniels isn’t my type. Neither is my daughter.”
