It’s called “Innocent,” by Scott Turow. It comes out in May but I’m just about finished reading an advance copy, and I have to say: it’s pretty damn good. I won’t go anywhere near spoiling the plot but I’ll just mention the premise: it’s 20 years later and Rusty Sabich, the ‘hero’ of the first book, once again finds himself in some serious legal trouble. Also once again, a murder trial makes up the second half of this novel and, so far, it’s riveting. Many of the characters from the original novel are back in fairly sizable roles, too.
I loved “Presumed Innocent.” I thought it was a nearly-perfect suspense thriller and I’m glad to see Turow has written a worthy follow-up. I gave up reading his other novels after awhile but I just had to take a look at this one.
Also, I’m guessing that a movie version could provide Harrison Ford with a much-needed comeback role, if it was done correctly. I thought the “Presumed Innocent” movie back in 1990 was OK, but not nearly as good as the novel.
Anyway, I don’t work for the publisher or a bookstore or anything, so this post shouldn’t be considered a plug. (In fact, if Turow totally screws up the ending I’ll make sure to come back and let you know!)
