Prince "Buy English" Charles a hypocrite for buying German cars - yes or no?

There’s no made in Britan car that can replace a Vauxhall Omega? BTW what the heck is a Vauxhall Omega?

‘Buy-British’ Charles in German car deal

Hm, I think most if not all Brit automakers have been bought by the Germans.

I would think so.

I don’t think so.

I think it’s unreasonable to expect people to buy a different product just because it’s made locally. It’s all well and good to chant “You should buy British apples”, but doesn’t hold to reason that you should buy them instead of German oranges.

I know nothing about cars - British, German or otherwise - but I assume there is something about the German vehicle that the British doesn’t have. It may be style, it may be a nifty cupholder. I don’t believe anyone should be forced to settle for less just to buy a local product.

Ford owns Jaguar and Aston Martin, so the Germans don’t quite have all of them.

They don’t own MG-Rover either.

You would think that the MG XPower would have something to offer the man who is bored with waiting.

Top of the range version has 965bhp in a car that weighs just 1400 kilos, for the person who realises that 350bhp (baseline model) is just not enough.

Technically, isn’t he & his family of German descent?

Pre-WWI wasn’t their name Übernaziblitzkreig Von Jewzengassen or something, before they changed it to Windsor?

Because the royal families of Europe are so deeply intermarried, the House of Windsor’s real designation would be something like the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg-Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, plus a few more, and I’m sure Mountbatten would be shoehorned in there somewhere.

Yes, the Windsors are of German descent. But I think they qualify as being plenty British by now.

(Pssssst, Hail Ants! As an American of almost completely German ancestry and an admirer of German culture, I can comfortably say that there are many things to mock the Germans about. However, they’ve caught quite enough grief over their governments of the 1920s through 1945. I know you were joking, but Nazi jokes aren’t very funny they’re always in bad taste. Don’t be a jerk like that.

Besides, I think it was Strudelganger von Lederhosen.)

GM owns Vauxhall, so even if “Bonny Charlie” bought one of those, he’d still be buying a “not-British” car. Besides, British cars are known to be, uh, rather lacking in the quality control department. (Before Ford bought Jag, it used to take them something like 50,000 miles before they got the kinks worked out of the car.) So while I don’t blame Charles for not buying a British made car (then again, he’s the FREAKIN’ prince, I think he can afford to have someone DRIVE him around), it certainly shows a lack of political acumen in doing so. (Remember Pat Buchanon’s first run for the White House, where he was championing “Buy American!” only to have it revealed that he drove Mercedes?

Millions of civilians killed in death camps…Countless British and European women and Children killed in bombing raids… I think the statute of limitations on making fun of and belittling Germany’s history isn’t even close to running out.

Germany’s history makes tasteless jokes okay?

Germany’s history IS a tasteless joke.

Nothing like simplistic sloganeering, is there?

Well, it worked for the Nazi party.

Sure did. Although quite how that’s relevant to the current generation of Germans escapes me somewhat.

Which generation? The generation that fought in the war is still around.

I would like to introduce to a nice little man name Godwin…

If you two are going to pull out your boxcutters and fight WWII all over again while hijacking this thread in the process, at least make it land someplace warm and sunny m’kay?

Yup, sorry about that. I think he should be able to buy whatever car he likes. Just because he says to buy British, doesn’t mean he has to make every single purchase a British one.
