Harry wanted an actual combat position and for awhile actually got one, until someone blew his cover and his presence became a risk not just to himself but his entire unit. So, while he had a military career it’s not the one he wanted and not the one he could have had, if he had not been so closely related to the Queen.
My fantasy is that Charles on down are all just playing along until the Queen dies and then they can dismantle the whole silly institution. Harry just jumped the gun.
What a hateful opinion piece! I note the disclaimer that this is not the official position of Al Jazeera, where the op-ed originally appeared, but I’ve lost all respect for them for publishing it. I know there are lots of anti-royalists around, but publishing a diatribe of hate when any fellow human has died – let alone a distinguished historical figure – is unconscionable and offensive. If the author wants to rant against the monarchy, let him wait a decent and respectful interval before doing so.
Yes he continued to be the famous which would set him apart. On the other hand he wouldn’t have to worry about being passed over for promotion. He might not have had the career he wanted but he got to go to Sandhurst without much difficulty. He was able to become a cavalry officer and then leave that and become an Apache pilot. I suspect being who he is got him the assignments he wanted. It certainly kept him from being Corporal Windsor.
His father’s primary title being Prince of Wales kept that from happening. I don’t recall where I read it, but I do remember reading somewhere that while in the military his surname was considered to be “Wales”.
Yes, Andrew served about as long as he could, but he topped out as a Commander, which is a perfectly respectable career, but he never really had a hope of becoming an Admiral, no matter what he did.
It’s rather interesting that he began his Epstein association around the same time his Naval career ended.
That would be my guess. Apparently that bit in “the crown” is true, where he tells his mother about dating a woman who starred in “the awakening of Emily”, the story of a 17 who was introduced to sexual pleasures by a bunch of perverted older men.
Or, hear me out, a more nuanced take is that he was less inclined to avoid temptation and make bad decisions when he no longer had a naval career to worry about.
The old saying, it’s the doing that’s the crime not the thinking.
While that’s certainly possibly, i would have thought it would be more damaging to his career as an unveiler of plaques then it would be in a naval career.
But some (maybe most) of those stations stopped showing programming because they were based in lower Manhattan , not because they saw some sort of issue with airing their normal programming.
No, ads are definitely a part of it. If I ever disable adblock, the vast majority of videos I see run an ad before them as well as right afterwards before you have a chance to stop the video.
It seems in line with how many sites that do have articles will also will autoplay a video and scroll it along with you, too, even if the video isn’t actually of the content you’re reading. Why do that except that you’re trying force people to watch videos? You can’t read and watch at the same time, after all.
I think that might be reading a bit more into the writing than what was intended. I thought they were just acknowledging a minor scandal at the time that they didn’t feel was important enough to dwell on. Andrew’s relationship with Koo Stark was widely reported at the time and she was seen to be an unsuitable match. American, an actress, someone who was naked on film. Strike three. Maybe it’s a subtle dig at the future but she is 4 years older than Andrew so her age was not an issue.
I didn’t mean to imply that the actress was underage – but the role she played was that of an underage girl “initiated into sensual pleasure by a lot of perverted twisted older men”, or something like that (I’m paraphrasing what the actor playing Andrew said about it in the TV show.)
That’s awfully close to what he’s alleged to have done when he was older.
