My old computer has developed a weird problem I can’t diagnose. Maybe the Teeming Millions can give me a hand…
First, let me say that I have no right to expect this particular computer to be trouble-free. It is old and creaky and it has so many peripherals connected to it, it should have kicked long ago. But I just need to squeeze a few more months out of it until I have all the money together for a new machine to replace it. The thing has served me faithfully for years.
Since I installed AdAware a few weeks ago, every minute or so, a pop-up window shows up that says “Printing PCL.” If there’s paper in my printer, it will go through the printer and print a few characters of gobbledy-gook in the upper left hand corner but otherwise leave the paper untouched. Since I didn’t want to waste perfectly good paper, I took all the paper out of the printer.
Now, the “Printing PCL” window pops up every 20 seconds or so for just an instant and then disappears. I’ve checked the print queue - there’s nothing stuck in there. I’ve rebooted. I’ve reinstalled printer drivers. No dice. The “Printing PCL” window keeps flashing on my screen at 20-second intervals. I can’t get it to go away. I don’t get how it started showing up in the first place, as I don’t print from DOS.
Anybody have a clue as to how to get rid of this window? It’s not as annoying as X-10, but it’s close.
