Typically when I hold doen the right arrow in text the cursor flies through words and it is sometimes easier than using the mouse. However, after I use my computer for awhile sometimes it changes to a really slow mode. When holding down the key, it moves one letter, waits a half a second then moves to the next and waits again. This has nothing to do with my computer running slow but seems to be deliberate. How do I make this go back to normal? So far only resetting my computer works which is a pain and I have not been succesful at googling the issue.
PC or Mac?
Operating system and version?
What program are you using when this happens?
Have you checked for viruses and spyware?
PC. Windows 2000 SP 4. Once it occurs it occurs for all programs that use text as far as I can tell, it is occuring now as I type this message in IE as it does for Word, Excel, etc. It is my work PC so I assume they have the viruses/spyware issue under control. I thought it may have been that I inadvertantly hit a key combo that sets it to this mode and was unaware of the combo to turn it back to normal, but I am not sure.
There are three possible things this could be, and since this is a work computer, I am not sure if your work’s IT department should be handling the issue, or you are permitted to take care of this yourself.
1.) Faulty keyboard
> Try swapping out with another keyboard
2.) Some other software is slowing down your machine (maybe a virus or spyware are consuming system resources)
> Get your works’ IT department to check it out, or do it yourself if you are permitted using something like HijackThis to find out what is running.
3.) Driver conflicts or driver issues for your keyboard (some keyboards have third party drivers which cause conflicts)
> Uninstall the driver, and then reboot
Do you work in the kind of place that might have found it necessary to install a keystroke logger on your machine?
If Crimethink does work in that sort of place, Crimethink should think about not posting to the dope during working hours.
Are there OS options designed for disabled people that might cause this behavior? I vaguely recall something like this being mentioned by a friend with cerebral palsy. Could such an option possibly have been turned on accidentally?
