problem burning CDs on Matshita UJDA710 drive

Hi there,

I have a Toshiba Satellite 5000 running WinXP Home with service pack 2. It has a drive (a Matshita UJDA710, came already installed on the machine) which plays CDs and DVDs fine and is also supposed to burn CDs. I have done this successfully in the past.

However, now it will still read/play cds/dvds, but won’t burn. If you insert a blank cd-r (the same type I have always used, even the same batch as a previous successful burn) it will spin up, then stop, spin up, then stop continuously. If I try to write, I either get told there is no disc in the drive, or it will appear to be writing but at the end I will get a message saying the write has failed and the cd may now be unusable.

I am just trying to write with the software that comes with winXP, nothing special.

I have tried restarting the computer, updating the drivers (apparently they are fine), running the troubleshooter (the computer says the drive is working fine) to no avail.

I think the problem may have started after I installed service pack 2 but I can’t be sure because I don’t burn cds all that often (just to back up files).

Any advice (either how to fix the problem or steps to take to identify it further) would be appreciated - I am a poor student who can’t afford to buy a new CD drive or get a USB drive as a replacement.
