Problem burning CD's with Lite-on LTR-48246S

Up until recently I have had no problem burning cd’s, then suddenly, the problem started. I can still listen to cd’s however when I try to burn one, the cd just spins around and wont stop. This Screenshot shows what it looks like. I end up having to control-alt-del and reboot before my cdrw drive will allow me to eject the cd-rom.

I have tried the obvious things like trying a better quality CD but that did not help. I tried other programs aside from NERO (the one I usually use) and get the same result. Finally,I went to lite-on’s website to look for drivers or firmware upgrades. There were no driver updates and when I downloaded the firmware upgrade and tried to install it, I got a message saying that I did not have model LTR-48246s. As you can tell by the this screenshot, , I do have that model.

I am at wits and and really want to burn some CD’s. Does anyone have suggestions as to how this can be resolved?

Thank you in advance.

Have you tried burning at a lower rate?

I am sorry, I did forget to mention that. Yes, I did burn at a lower rate but experienced the same problem.

Unfortunately most of the time CD burner hardware malfunctions are not fixable and it’s unlikely that flashing the BIOS would do much good, even if it was possible. I have never had a CD be end user servicable once it started to flake. The burning laser or related electronics are probably munged. You can get new burners for $ 20 - $30 after rebate.

On the off the chance the software is acting goofy try another burner program. If the burner is still acting flaky you can be pretty sure it’s the hardware.

Where did you download the firmware from?

If you have Nero 6 try the utilities in the Nero Toolkit to check the drive.

I had the exact same problem with a liteon 48x.
I took it in to my computer techs. And all I got was, “well we can burn.” …“uhuh. What speed?” … “8x.” … “It’s a fucking 48x drive!” … “just use better discs.” … “I have!”
So I took my computer home, did the nero utilites (run it through a discspeed, and you will see that something is definetely wrong.) took a screen shot of this, took it in to those bastards, and they replaced my lite-on 48x24x48x with a 52x32x52x
I don’t think the problem is fixable. You’ll probably have to get a new one.

Took your advice and bought a new one. I got a 52x32x52x which ran me about $80 installed. Much easier than trying to figure out what was wrong with the old one.

Thanks guys!

You’re welcome.
I thought it might’ve just been a problem with my disc drive, but maybe there’s always problems with the Liteon 48x drives? May’be next time I’ll buy a sony.

I have both a Sony 500DRU and an LG 4081B (which will also read DVD-RAM discs). Both are great drives although the LG is a bit faster burning DVDs. Never burned a coaster in either.

Both are relatively cheap now (I paid $350 for the Sony about a year and a half ago and $100 for the LG a couple of months ago).
