Why can't my DVD burner finalize disks??

I have a Lite On SOHW 1693S and it works perfectly fine with everything until it comes to the end of a burn. When it is finalizing, it gives me an error message saying it couldn’t finish. I have used both Nero and Express Burn both with the same results(sorry I can’t get the exact error message, I would have to create 2 more coasters to get them). I am just saving some mpeg files, nothing complicated.

I would hate to think it was bad media because I have a few hundered Memorex’s and can’t fathom the fact that my Lite On drive is incompatible with the most common brand of media.

Since I have tried 2 different types of burning software, I might suspect just having a bad DVD drive, but that seems weird because it plays DVD’s/games just fine, and it goes through the entire burn process, just craps out just before saying “job complete”

Any suggestions? Are there some settings I need to mess with that I don’t know about? Is there a compatibility issue with Lite On drives and Memorex DVD’s?

Oh yeah, the firmware is up to date, in case it matters.

First thing I would try is burning at a slower speed.

You don’t mention the OS. Ahem.

Anyhoo, some older versions of MS OSes cause a problem like this due to autorun kicking in. Turn off autorun for that drive and see if that helps.

Try InfraRecorder. I seems pretty bulletproof to me. If it fails, it would strongly suggest to me a hardware problem or a media problem.

Caveat: I have only actually used the PortableApps version.

Oh yeah. Windows XP. Just disabled auto-run. Will try again.

So I turned off autorun and downloaded Infrarecorder. I just successfully burned a 2GB mpeg to a DVD. I’m not exactly sure what did the trick. I’ll tinker around once I get my hands on a DVD-RW. My seemingly inexhaustible supply of DVD-R’s took a big hit over the last few weeks after I made about 30 coasters trying to figure this out.

One weird thing. I could not get the mpeg to play in my DVD-RW drive. I finally tried it in my DVD-ROM drive (which is also ia Lite-on)and it worked just fine. Go figure.
