Problem connecting a DVD drive through a USB2 PCMCIA card

A friend of mine has recently got a DVD recorder and he wants to connect it through USB 2.0. His laptop has USB 1.1 ports, so he bought an external PCMCIA USB 2.0 card (with chipset NEC uPD 720100).

The problem is that the DVD works on the standard USB 1.1 ports, but not on the USB 2.0 ports. Other devices work fine on the USB 2.0 ports.

Why does this happen? Is there a solution?

Wait, are you saying he got a DVD burner that natively runs USB 1.1 only? Or is it a 2.0 that doesn’t want to run at all on the PCMCIA card?
Does it auto detect at all? Are you getting anything when you plug it in on the PCMCIA USB port?

As long as the PCMCIA card is working (and apparently it is) I can’t see why it won’t work with the DVD drive. Is the PCMCIA being detected as a true USB2.0?
