Problem loading drivers on Windows 10

I recently had a thread:Windows 10 keeps crashing - #9 by The_Man_In_Black where I was helped out. I ended up needing to remount my cpu heat sink with new paste.

But now I am having trouble loading drivers. I tried Googling the answers, but I had no luck so far. I noticed the problem when I tried to play Diablo 2: Resurrected. The game wouldn’t load, I googled, and saw the most common reason is out of date graphics drivers, which made since.

I downloaded the drivers for my EVGA GeForce GTX 970 04G-P4-2978-KR 4GB, but when they are in the process of installing, it has an error and restarts Windows. But Windows wont load. It keeps just starting then crashing. After a few times it takes me to the troubleshooting page, and I go to a restore point.

I tried several times. No change. I just now looked up and installed the drivers for my motherboard ( GIGABYTE G1 Gaming GA-H170-Gaming 3 (rev. 1.0)), but the only updated drivers it offered were for the audio, which I can’t see helping (but I could be wrong).

Should I try to install the graphics drivers again? It is getting to be a pain to keep going to restore points.

Thanks

In addition the .net framework is 4.0. I seem to need version 4.8 to run NordVPN (and possibly other applications). I tried to update windows, but some components would not work. I tried Googling the problem, but I can’t fine an answer.

Delete NordVPN for the moment. You do NOT want it running while doing all the setup and driver updates. You can bring it back later as the last thing. Just keep it simple when doing setup tasks because Nord just complicates things. I have Nord, not dissing on it. Just get confounding factors out of the loop.

Make sure Windows is up to date. Click on your Start button (Windows icon, lower left corner) and type, “Windows Update”…click on Check for Updates. Keep doing that until Windows says there are none.

Again, click on your Start button and type, “Device Manager”. See if there are any yellow or red icons showing which suggest those things need drivers. Fix any errors you find.

Download your video driver from Nvidia and not EVGA. During install Nvidia has a checkbox that allows you to do a clean install (i.e. it will completely erase what was there previously and install your new drivers).

Make doubly, triply sure you are downloading the correct drivers for the card you have. Use the Game Ready Driver unless you have specific reason not to (assuming it is a choice).

If the latest driver does not work consider an earlier driver as a test (easily available).

After that is done you can try downloading any EVGA specific bells and whistles but a 970 is dated…not sure what EVGA still supports.

Not sure what the Gigabyte thing is. Maybe a built-in video/audio driver?

On a new install Windows 10 is really good at getting what you need automatically. Old drivers being installed later may not be helpful. Hard to say.

That’s the real answer here; these days, the best drivers are from the GPU makers, not the card makers. Same thing for motherboards/chipsets.

The problem seems to be taken care of now. I updated Windows for the third time, and that finally loaded all the components of the update and installed them properly. Doing that took care of the problem with NordVPN and with installing my game. It was just confusing my as to why it took a few attempts at updating Windows for it to actually install all the updates.

Again, thank all of you for the help.

Sometimes updates need to be done in sequence.

For instance:

Update 1 changes things in Folder-A
Update 2 changes things in Folder-B

Update 2 only works if things in Folder-A were updated first.

So, you need to go through a succession of updates.

Glad you got it all sorted.
